Product Description

Product Description

"Perceptions of Pain" is a moving and startling collection of images that explores the interface between doctor and patient, photographer and subject, maker and viewer, science and art. Additional texts by Professor Brian Hurwitz, Doctor Charles Pither and Deborah Padfield examine cultural and medical aspects of pain from multiple perspectives, questioning our assumptions about the pain experience and its place within the medical setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last: a (visually stunning) way of communicating pain..., 12 Jun 2004

This review is from: Perceptions of Pain (Hardcover)
After suffering from pain for a period of years, you realize that the most difficult part of the experience can be explaining how you feel about it (and how it makes you feel) to other people -- both friends and family, and medical practitioners.

This book provides a first step -- nay, a giant leap -- in doing this: and is both beautiful (and sometimes overwhelming) to look at, and awe-inspiring in the work Deborah Padfield has helped her fellow-sufferers create. The accompanying texts are also some of the most enlightening and lucid I have read on the subject.

If you sadly suffer from chronic pain -- or know someone that does -- please read this book and let its images work their impact and wonder on you; treasure it, and make sure that everyone you know picks it up and opens it too.

Thank you, Deborah, for your wonderful work...
