Book Description

5 Aug 2004
'There are some things in life better not known - some things that should be left where they rest...' Erin Paterson runs her grandfather's law firm in Glasgow, and is an uncompromisingly aggressive negotiator. But the success of her practice is not echoed in her personal life. Erin's father has had a stroke. She can't stand her mother. Her sister's a flake and their brother, Leland, committed suicide. She's not doing too well with her boyfriend either, whom she discovers in flagrante the day that an old-school friend, Lucy Grant, is murdered. From this moment, events unravel to test Erin's resolve to the maximum. Can she hold onto her job, even onto her life, when the past slithers out of the darkness to expose a secret in the family that no one dares confront?

Review

"Quite simply, this is one of the best crime novels you're likely to read this year. As a first novel, it's quite extraordinary, and marks the arrival of an exceptional new talent on the British mystery scene"
--John Connolly
"I really enjoyed it - she's a breath of fresh air in the Scottish crime fiction field. It's got lots of genuinely black comedic moments but also some grimly painful storytelling"
--Val McDermid

"From the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pageturner for the girls 21 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this book because of the recommendation on the front, and wasn't disappointed. The plot is more a bombardment of revelations than a story, but I have to confess the author had me reading into the small hours. Although I didn't particularly like the main character, the ending is worth the wait.

This struck me as very much a women's crime novel - I really couldn't imagine my husband enjoying it at all. Men, you have been warned!

Came across this book quite by chance. So glad I did. Great book, kept me guessing till the end.
Don't start reading this book unless you have the time to finish it. You won't want to put it down!
Can't wait for the sequel, which is due out soon to see what Erin has been up to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Remember, it's her first book..... ? 12 Aug 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Being male, I expected a nice gritty book that requires some thought and logic. Approximately one third into the book, I realised this was not what I was getting - indeed the novel did seem aimed at the female market.

I finished through to the end anyway; at least by the end I may have an idea of how professional and aspirational 'career-type' women work if not nothing!

I liked the twist at the end of the story however, and this will lead me to buy the sequel when it's released [soon].

There is promise in this author and I will look forward to her up and coming works to see how her talent develops. I recommend others do likewise, as Louise's output is unique.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is There a Point?
I found this book made less and less sense as the plot went on, and by the end had no idea what was happening, or why- even worse I just didn't care.
