4.0 out of 5 stars At last the brilliant Wheat have a new album, 26 Dec 2003
By Dr. A. Boyadjiev "anton.boyadjiev" (leicester) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you have even heard of Wheat you are doing well. They are one of those non-comercial bands that make beautful alternative music, for the sake of music itself. 'Don't I hold you' from Hope and Adams will always be my favorite song, but this new album is also very good. Though some of the songs, eg. number 6, sound quite simple, most of the others are very, very good. Number 5 is so good it sends shivers down my spine. Overall this album is a fantastic addition to the music collection of anyone who loves calm alternative music, and you just know its one that very few other people have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylistic jump from art house roots to mainstream pop, 18 Jul 2004
By A Customer
Assumptions may be the mother of all things bad but I would suggest that expectations do a better job when referring to albums. With cheerless irony, let us assume that one expected Wheat to follow up the critically acclaimed "Hope and Adams" with more of the same. After all, the stylistic jump from the debut, "Medeiros" to "Hope and Adams" was certainly not massive. Such expectation was shattered when along the way, the art house band get signed to a major record label and out of a bizarre sense of spite, the album is immediately rubbished by fans. At the age of eighteen it is terrible for ones favorite cool band to get popular right? Where "Per Second..." is certainly not the best album ever, it is written and produced with flair, imagination and skill. The clear stylistic jump from "Hope and Adams" is to me a good thing. A lot of what made "Hope and Adams" unique and likeable has admittedly been lost yet replaced with slick pop song writing, catchiness and even greater style at the hands of David Fridmann. This album is a pop/rock album that deserves radio airplay that I am certain it will be denied adding a further sense of irony to this review.

2.0 out of 5 stars a real disappointment, 20 April 2004
By A Customer
When I first heard ‘don’t I hold you’ from wheat’s second LP Hope and Adams I was overwhelmed with how sparse, simple, straightforward and honest it was; it was one of those songs that sounded like it had always been there and that is always a mark of a classic. When I heard the atrocity that is ‘the major label remix’, placed(luckily) as a ‘hidden track’ at the end of Per Second it was the nail in the coffin for what had already been a very average listen.
It seems as if Per Second values style way over substance, the songs only lifted above mediocrity by some polished production skills. Most of the songs have one, single, constantly recurring hook as if to leave no doubt in the listeners mind ‘where’ the catchy bit is supposed to be. It is the kind of ‘purpose built’ ‘audience aware’ pop rock album that I thought wheat could never make, barley redeemed by the few quality Dave Fridmann flourishes that appear here and there. My advice - try and get hold of the nude records version of this album that unfortunately never saw the light of day.
