This book is definitely one of Meg Hutchinson's best. The suspense gripped me from the moment I read the first few pages. It has all the traditional elements of a family saga but with a healthy dose of murder, mystery and intrigue. It effectively covers and breaks down the perceived boundaries of class, social status and race. All this combines to make a totally compelling read. Definitely at the top of my current list of favourites.

Meg Hutchinson at her best. There is a gentle touch thoughout the whole book, by both the gypies and the heroine. Hutchinson has not lost her touch and this must be amongst her best so far. I have read them all and would strongly recommend this to all, especially to her fans
