Product Description

Product Description

The newest addition to the OakTable Press series, PeopleSoft for the Oracle DBA, will teach you a range of techniques for maintaining a PeopleSoft system. You will then become able to implement techniques like indexing, implementing DDL, managing tablespaces, and fixing low-performing SQL queries. Author David Kurtz is a field expert and provides answers to common questions that arise when using PeopleSoft on an Oracle database.

Kurtz begins the book with an architecture overview, then proceeds to BEA Tuxedo, PeopleSoft’s application server. Kurtz transitions smoothly between subsequent chapters, explaining database structures, connectivity, keys and indexing, the PeopleSoft DDL, and tablespaces. Kurtz gives appropriate weight to advanced topics as well, like schemas, performance metrics, performance monitoring utilities, and SQL optimization techniques. The final chapters provide crucial, advanced information about Tuxedo.

About the Author

Having studied Physics at UCL, Kurtz was introduced to Oracle in 1989 and spent 6 years in a software house as an Oracle Developer/DBA, working on assurance and insurance software. In 1996, Kurtz joined PeopleSoft in the UK, starting out in support and gradually moving into consultancy, over several years. Since there was virtually no internal documentation about how PeopleSoft related to the database, Kurtz began learning it by himself. This led to fixing performance problems in PeopleSoft systems. Soon enough, Kurtz was spending all of his time on performance-related consultancy. Kurtz left PeopleSoft in 2000, and set up Go-Faster Consultancy Ltd. (www.go-faster.co.uk), providing performance and technical consultancy to PeopleSoft users. Since then, Kurtz has learned to apply principles of wait-based tuning to the database, and to the PeopleSoft layers atop the database. Kurtz has been a member of the UK Oracle User Group since 1994, and became chairman of the Unix SIG in 2000. He presents regularly at PeopleSoft and UKOUG conferences and SIG meetings. After a roundtable discussion at a PeopleSoft conference in 2002, Kurtz started the lively PeopleSoft DBA Forum on yahoo, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psftdba/.

Dave Kurtz has put together the knowledge that he has gathered about installing and performance tuning a PeopleSoft system that uses Oracle. If you are an Oracle DBA running PSoft then this book is for you. It covers versions 7.5 through to 8.44 and has considerable background info about how PeopleSoft uses the web server, Tuxedo and (of course) the Oracle database.

The book covers performance troubleshooting in some depth - showing how to check each tier's performance. This includes some basics of web server tuning, the intricacies of the application server and the link between the SQL used on the database and how PeopleCode and queries are written. Here the book crosses over briefly and would be useful to developers too.

The main area that I would have liked to see more on would be the regular maintenance jobs that a DBA will need to do to keep a PeopleSoft system up and running e.g. which items should be checked on a regular basis, back ups, audits, managing upgrades.

This book is a deep in-depth view of the function of Peoplesoft on an Oracle database. Not only does it cover the fundamentals of how Peoplesoft uses the database features, it also details almost every table in the system on a row by row basis. An in-depth resource which is sure to be invaluable to anyone using this software configuration.

Best PeopleSoft book for Oracle DBA who needs to learn PeopleSoft support 23 Jan 2006
By Benjamin S. Prusinski - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have been an Oracle DBA for ten years and needed to ramp up very quickly recently for a large client to support their PeopleSoft environment without time to get training on PeopleSoft. This book fits the void left empty as the other PeopleSoft books are geared toward PeopleSoft application developers and not for an Oracle DBA who needs to understand the new ways of working with Oracle databases and PeopleSoft applications. Definitely a gold mine of nuggets for those who need to understand Peoplesoft on Oracle!!

Served as excellent overview for me 11 Aug 2007
By Alex Gorbachev - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book just to get familiar with Peoplesoft environment (before the project to install Oracle RAC for Peoplesoft) and cover what I need to know as Oracle DBA. It beats all my expectations - I found lots of DBA relevant details as well as extremely useful overview of architecture and application design with Tuxedo.
After skimming through the book for few hours, I was able to fully understand and talk to Peoplesoft people at client side. In some cases, I knew even more details (or where to get more) than DBA on client site. Showed this book to the client DBA and he was so much thrilled with that - ran and bought it right away.
Well done David! Excellent Job. Thanks!
