Product Description

From Amazon.com
People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is, quite simply, one of the finest albums in hip-hop. It's easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this, their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc (The Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness, never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phife's delivery is deceptively simple, flowing like wine and tasting like candy, and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music, so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle, follows suit. Four albums later, on their last tour, songs from Paths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list. --Randy Silver

5.0 out of 5 stars the most complete hip hop recording of the early 90's, 20 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Quite simply one of the best debut albums ever. Even though their youthful naivety shines through, Q-Tip and Phife both sound positive with out ever swaying to being preachy. The music is the funkiest since the 70's, and everytrack will leave you smiling. One of thoses rare hip hop albums you can listen too all the way through.

4.0 out of 5 stars gone but not forgotten..., 15 Jun 2003

Ok, this is an old album but it still sounds awesome! In fact, i'd go so far as to say that there has not been a hip-hop record before or after this that has bettered it. I long ago left the world of hip-hop as i felt it had started to destroy itself - hoes, pimps, gangsters - this album has none of that. Instead we are treated to a super-sonic blast of social consciounce that leaves the nu-skool bunch like 50 cent and Jay Z out in the cold. Whether you like hip-hop or not, this is a must-have record! Sweet samples mixed with easy, flowing rhymes delivered with humor and grace. Highlights include the much played "Can I Kick It?" and the whole album simply rocks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bringing the advent of native tounged funk., 3 Aug 2000
11 years on, and the original vinyl still graces my decks with regularity. 'People's..' defined the advent of the native tounges along with technically superior Jungle Brother's follow up 'Done by the forces of nature' and the de la soul debut. But it was the quest who made funky and acceptably light tunes, whilst allowing the hardcore b boy and girl following to chill and nod along to chart bound hits and catchphrases like 'can I kick it'. Q-tip was a world away from the dexterity and maturity he displayed on the subsequent albums, and so was the content, but amongst the bouncy funk were the genesis of quests inimitable style that has carved them a niche in hip hop history. An innovative use of samples and hooks made this easy listening but with a kick and snare that did just that. Quality tunes that still have a place blasting from a system on those hot summer days, from Birmingham to El Segundo..
