Product Description

Product Description

As part of the 26 part series from the BBC, this volume looks at the aftermath of the First World War. Using archive footage and testimonies from eye-witnesses, it charts political and social developments from 1919. Starting with the Paris Peace Conference and the Treaty of Versailles, it also looks at the repercussions of mass production and labour disputes as well as the growth and popularity of sport as recreation and as a vehicle for national ideology.

5.0 out of 5 stars riverting and brilliantly made 21 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This has to be the greatest documentary series I have ever seen. Letting the archive footage and eyewitness interviews speak for thenselves and without trying to proove anything, the makers deserve all the praise they got for this and More besides. However, perhaps the best thing about this series is the fact that each program is it's own seperate entity covering one particular subject and not trying to link all the subjects together. As a result this can be enjoyed either as a complete box set or as individual programmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing 30 April 2003
Format:VHS Tape
I can only add to the praise in the other two reviews. This is an absolutely magnificent example of documentary filmmaking, and I am so glad that I found it on Amazon after looking for it many other places and after having seen bits and pieces of the series on the Discovery Channel. The information in the series is organised not so much in a time line, although there is that, as subject by subject. Among the topics to be discussed are the rise of nationalism in Europe after World War I, the development of sports as big business, the great advances in medicine in the latter half of the 20th century, the emergence of Communism in China, the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, etc. It is 27 hours of absolutely riveting television. I have watched it from start to end twice and will now put it away for a while and then watch it again - it's THAT good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable series 19 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
People's Century, screened on BBC television, was a 26-part documentary series chronicling major historical events during the twentieth century through interviews with those who witnessed/were affected by them. Ranging from a person who saw Queen Victoria in 1900, to an eyewitness of the Kennedy asassination in 1963, it was superbly narrated by Sean Barrett and Veronica Hyks. The series employed an extensive range of archive material to present a compelling visual narrative. An ambitious, groundbreaking series which emerges as truly unmissable.
