The first book of the First North American Series by the Gears. A fascinating story with a carefully researched background and lots of information about how life was some thousand years ago. I read the book from beginning to end without being able to stop, and I have re-read it several times ever since.

I was eager to read this first in the Gear's series of novels about the early, prehistoric Native American tribes. I was really hoping that I'd enjoy it enough that I would have a whole new series of books to read.

However, I found it very disappointing. The characters seemed very cliched. We had the wise old woman dispensing mystical advice. The young warrior who loves the young woman who has been married to an older man she doesn't love and is lost to him. The old, cruel medicine man who is really conning his people and has no magic. We even had an evil twin, who hates the young hero and also lusts after the young woman...and so on and so on.

Beyond the main characters, the rest of the cast were almost entirely interchangeable and made little impression on this reader. None of them stood out as unique.

As for the plot, I was never convinced that the history was authentic. At times, it read more like a modern soap opera than anything meticulously researched and more and more as I went through the novel I found myself questioning if something were true or just made up by the authors.

Inevitably, comparisons with Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear arise and I have to say that I found no compelling characters or depth of historical detail in this novel as can be found there.

Despite Auel's later disappointments, I'd recommend reading her first three 'Earth's Children' novels, rather than this.
