Product Description

Product Description

On Jules Street, the longest street in Johannesburg, almost everyone is crooked. The furniture stores owned by Harry Sher and Jack Rubin is repeatedly ram-raided, robbed, and defrauded - even by some of their own trusted managers. While they welcome the new democracy that is South Africa today, Harry and Jack - finding succour in humour - struggle with the daily violence that is part of apartheid's legacy. In People Who Have Stolen From Me, Cohen spends time with the stolen from as well as the stealers - black and white - to reveal how they justify what they do. This is the story of South Africa at the crossroads, of a new emerging morality, or a nation in the throes of rebuilding itself. It is also a universal tale about conscience, betrayal and trust. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Decent read 16 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
Centers around a furniture & appliance store & the crimes perpetrated against & within it: armed robbers / shoplifters / burglars / ram-raiders / "shrinkage"(employee theft)/ embezzlers (to include family members!) / etc., as narrated from largely the owners' standpoint;

Some history, some sociology, some psychology, some philosophy regarding crime from both sides: perpetration / justification vs. reactions of victims(economics & realities of prosecution / psychological trauma / disillusionment & distrust / etc.)

A decent read.

Excellent work 3 Aug 2005

This is an incredible book that beats the pants off of so much of what is considered good writing. Compelling, funny, you can't put it down. There is something here for everyone.
"Rough Justice" but NOT a "rough" read! 26 Feb 2011

Centers around a furniture & appliance store & the crimes perpetrated against & within it: armed robbers / shoplifters / burglars / ram-raiders / "shrinkage"(employee theft)/ embezzlers (to include family members!) / etc., as narrated from largely the owners' standpoint; Interesting too, are the attitudes of the overwhelmed police & private security companies.

Some history, some sociology, some psychology, some philosophy regarding crime from both sides, during a time of social change. An entertaining read, to be sure.
