I was initially uncertain about this book and had already bought of couple of others covering the same topic. However, once I picked it up I found it helpful, insightful and well written from beginning to end (a very unusual situation with most self-help books I've found). Carter knows and understand his subject; that is, the personality type who wants to keep the peace, is very empathic and puts others first. The downside of this type is obviously that the People Pleaser (PP) often gets taken advantage of and can be easily abused, add to this a confusion in the PP about why life is difficult even though they try so hard and you have a recipe for an unhappy and unfulfilled life. Carter offers lots of useful case studies and analysis that helps the PP understand where they are coming from and what they can do to make life better. The book even concludes with straightforward steps that the PP can take to move on and improve their life (so much better than many other books that help to diagnose a "broken arm" in great detail but never tell you how to mend it). I was concerned that there would be too much Christian "stuff" but actually it's quite lightweight and not intrusive (another positive for the book). So, if you try very hard in life to be helpful and supportive but end up unhappy and put upon you just may find this book helpful.
