My wife and I have lots of Christmas albums but after hearing the Yorkshire Phil in concert decided to buy this one. It really is super. Lots for your money too with 20 tracks of superbly performed Christmas songs and carols, interspersed with solo Christmas pieces for the accompanying brass quintet and organ. There's new work such as the title track and the intriguing 'Chinese Carol'by musical director Andrew Padmore himself as well as old favourites and the less well known too, like 'Still, still, still'.
You can even sing along if you wish as they have thoughtfully added such famous carols as 'Hark the herald angels sing' and 'O come all ye faithful'. My personal favourites are the beautiful 'Candlelight Carol' by John Rutter and Harold Darke's wonderful arrangement of 'In the Bleak mid winter', both sensitively performed by this top choir.
I recommend you get it for yourself and buy it for at least one friend this Christmas - they'll love you for it.
Recently got the Yorkshire Philharmonic's latest CD too 'Feel the Spirit/Faure Requiem' check that out too - it's great - another good pressie.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great Christmas sing! 21 Nov 2009
By Anne O.
This is the recording to which to listen or sing along during the festive season - it has that fine mix of traditional and modern carols, with many of the old favourites. The singing is great, with sounds only an excellent choir in a Cathedral can produce, including of course a superb backing by the organ. It has many of my favourites, especially those by Rutter, with an interesting Chinese Carol composed by the choir's conductor Andrew Padmore, as well as other less well known very attractive arrangements. Pieces and accompaniment by the brass quintet enhance the whole recording. The effect is to produce an really uplifing sound for the Christmas period!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas CD to listen to! 20 Nov 2009
No Jingle Bells, no Rudolf, no Bing, no music that goes in one ear and out the other and makes you wish it was January already! This magic CD is one you will want to LISTEN to and is full of the real spirit of Christmas. It has lots of singalong favourites like O Come, O come Emmanuel, Once in Royal David's City, O Come all ye faithful and many others. There are many not so well known carols, some brand new and a number from foreign Christmas traditions, including a Chinese one! All my family and friends will be getting a copy of ths CD this Christmas. I was intrigued to get a copy after I heard the Yorkshire Philharmonic choir on Classic FM singing part of their latest CD of spirituals arranged by John Rutter. I was so impressed that I bought a copy and became an immediate fan of the Yorkshire Phil. Their Christmas music CD was a must for me.
