Product Description

Product Description
Photographing people is seldom easy. From how many vacations have you returned with great shots of the sea, mountains, or monuments you saw but without any pictures of the local people - the street vendors, shopkeepers, and children who really made your trip memorable? Intuitively you know that, friend or foe, people are self-conscious in front of a camera, so you hesitate before shooting. This book offers Bryan Peterson's expertise on photographing all kinds of people, from unwilling subjects to smiling babies. A location photographer, he constantly searches for people to portray in an interesting way and knows how to alleviate their surprise and anxiety about being photographed. Peterson illustrates chapters on observing people, approaching your subject, creating a mood with light, composing powerful portraits, and people as symbols with an exciting portfolio of his professional work shot around the world. As in his two previous books, he demonstrates solutions to various technical problems - for example, exposure, composition, lens length, and lighting - with before and after photographs. A final section gives tips on selling your photographs as stock. Most important, you will learn what psychological hurdles you need to overcome, internal as well as external, to make great pictures of anyone, anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix of photography and people skills, 12 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Everything you wanted to know about people photography, but were too shy to do. The photography tips are good, but even better are the tips on how to approach peolple. Its also an excellent read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful info, but not the best book on Portrait photography, 22 Jan 2009
By D. Topley "toppers" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I feel as though I didn't learn much from this book. It is a good showcase of the authors work and he is lucky to go to so many locations around the world, but that's not much use to me who doesn't get to travel the world.
The photos do have technical data, but it is repetitive and a lot say words such as "I set the aperture to f/8 and then set the shutter to 1/250 so that the meter showed the correct exposure settings" (or words to that effect).
And, for me, there wasn't enough detail on how to control various lighting conditions (indoor/outdoor).
The best tips I learnt were about using the same pose/setting/location and changing the Point Of view for different uses of the picture eg using the same scene for different stock photo requirements.
