Product Description

Product Description

Soul searching was an unfamiliar exercise to Bill Stratton, and he found it intriguing as well as painful. He hadn't had much occasion for it in his life, given that he was fairly shallow, but then, on the verge of his sixtieth birthday, his wife told him she was leaving him for another man. He'd been under the impression they had a happy marriage. She assured him that for nearly forty years, in fact since the second week of their honeymoon, she'd known she was married to the wrong person. This all came as a bit of a shock to Bill. Hence the soul searching. Brought up to be a responsible sort of chap, and hitting young adulthood just the wrong side of the sixties, Bill had not had much experience of dating (or sex, for that matter) before he met and married Andrea. Post menopausal dating might be very different to dating in your twenties or thirties, but then he didn't know much about either scene. Still, as a mildly famous television newsreader who'd managed to hold on to (most of) his looks, it seemed he was about to have plenty of opportunities to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and amusing., 5 Nov 2008

From the cover...
"One of the great discoveries of humankind is post-menopausal sex - the love that dares not speak its name terribly loudly when younger people are present. The thought of wrinkled and wizened bodies engaging in that kind of activity is repellent... until, of course, it's your body that's wrinkled and wizened."

Simon Brett has a great turn of phrase and a wry humour and I have enjoyed reading many of his books, especially the Fethering Mysteries.

This is the story of sixty year old Bill Stratton, newsreader and tv personality, who is shocked to hear that his wife has been unhappily married since their wedding day and is leaving him for another man. Single and sixty Bill starts dating with some very amusing results.

A little bit naughty in parts but never shockingly so. I lent this to my parents and they thought it was great too. Unusually, it has pleased every one who has borrowed it regardless of their age or usual reading preferences.

It is refreshing to read a book based on a character who is a little older than those usually found (although I am sure someone will immediately quote a dozen exceptions to this now I have made the comment). Well done Simon Brett for going beyond the stereotypical.

An easy and witty read. Highly recommended.
