What a wonderfully practical design. The retraction mechanism for lead delivery is very effective as it leaves the point hidden inside and the whole thing sits well in the hand, having a comforting weight, rubber nodes to assist with grip and a sprung clip which lodges it safely in the pocket of even winter jackets. Its simple, modern lines give it a striking appearance, which was its downfall for me: one of my students nicked it. The only slight tarnish was the metallic smell that the alloy sometimes left on the hand. If you have anyone in your life with a soft spot for design aesthetics, one - or even a set - of these would be a memorable gift.

There is only one other thing wrong with this pen.
The lead grade indicator reminder widget is completely, absolutely and totally useless. It relies on the tightness of the pen body to rotate the printed h hb b labels under a tiny tiny, shadowy cutout. This means, in practice, that the thing can only ever sit in one place without unscrewing... which it WILL do if not tight.
Useless and unreadable anyway.

Everything else about this thing is marvelous. Solid and comfortable. The lead doesn't slip and it therefore feels like a freshly sharpened "proper" pencil all the time, unlike some others I've used where the amount of backlash in the clutch gets annoying after a while and finally becomes a point of teeth-wearing spinctre-gripping obsession. A joy to use and a joy to play with. This is gadget engineering at its best. Beautifully machined with Swiss-watch quality. It actually makes me grin to use it. Long sessions of use remain comfortable and, of course, it doesn't roll off the desk all the time

Something not mentioned in any of the sales pitch or catalogues; pressing the back if the nerd-pocket clip triggers a top-sheathing action. The business end flies up into the body, ready for the next press of the end button, when it repositions itself - without backlash sloppiness or wobble - ready for action once more. Much more fun for compulsives than playing with a ball-point pen mechanism.

The price, of course, is something of a minus point, being around four times the price of an averagely adequate lead holder. That, though has not put me off buying a second of these.

I actually did quite a lot of research before buying this pencil. As an engineer I have used a lot of mechanical pencils over the years, all of which have been relatively cheap models purchased from local stationery shops. When I was looking for a new one I decided to see if there was anything out there a little nicer than what I was used to. Well, my eyes were opened! I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that there are a multitude of websites dedicated to mechanical pencils (or clutch pencils if you hail from the USA). The most helpful site I found was Dave's Mechanical Pencils. He is a kiwi who has reviews of hundreds of pencils. It is clearly a labour of love.

On to this particular pencil. I was attracted by the good looking aluminium body, build quality and the neat mechanism by which the tip retracts when not in use. I have been stabbed a number of time by mechanical pencils, so it is great to be able to retract the sharp tip and know I am safe with the pencil in my trouser or shirt pocket.

I have found the grip to be really good - it is a mix of knurled aluminium and rubber dimples. In use this provides a solid and comfortable grip. The mechanism for pushing the lead through works well and seems reliable. The rubber works as you'd expect and it is useful that you can buy additional rubbers for the end at a reasonable price through Amazon also.

It isn't the cheapest pencil out there, but it is also far from the most expensive. Considering the style, quality and utility I'd say this is excellent value for money. If I ever lose mine I'll certainly be buying another one!

I wanted a pencil for writing notes, and knew that I wanted a thicker lead than the more common 0.7mm. 0.9mm is perfect for writing, and this pencil feels really well balanced and comfortable in the hand. The lead mechanism retracts with a nice solid click when the clip is pressed, making it safe to carry in a pocket, and pressing the top button pushes the lead out to where it was before. There is no need for fiddly readjusting. And I think this is a good price compared with other makes.

I bought one of these from a local stationary shop 2 or 3 years ago and expected to be using it daily in my workshop, I use a pencil to mark out work pieces. Sadly my wife who also uses a pencil to finish what I produce said she needed it to do just one job and I never got it back! Such is life, when I tried to buy another one they were no longer in stock so I have been using a lesser plastic version. Now I have my OWN Graphgear 1000 0.9mm and am very pleased with it.

This pencil is such high quality and the little touches such as a retracting tip are brilliant. They're so good I bought two more as presents for work colleagues.
