Product Description

A power kept secret for 2000 years. A woman who stands to lose everything.

India. When a nun is burned alive on the sacred ghats of Varanasi, and the stone she carried is stolen, an international hunt is triggered for the relics of the early church.

Forged in the fire and blood of martyrs, the Pentecost stones have been handed down through generations of Keepers who kept their power and locations secret.

Until now.

The Keepers are being murdered, the stones stolen by those who would use them for evil in a world transformed by religious fundamentalism.

Oxford University psychologist Morgan Sierra is forced into the search when her sister and niece are held hostage. She is helped by Jake Timber from the mysterious ARKANE, a British government agency specializing in paranormal and religious experience. Morgan must risk her own life to save her family, but will she ultimately be betrayed?

From ancient Christian sites in Spain, Italy and Israel to the far reaches of Iran and Tunisia, Morgan and Jake must track down the stones through the myths of the early church in a race against time before a new Pentecost is summoned, this time powered by the fires of evil.

The first in the ARKANE series, PENTECOST is a fast-paced thriller that explores the edges of faith against a backdrop of early Christian history, archaeology and psychology.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous romp 31 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The comparisons with Dan Brown are obvious but this book brings in something incredibly fresh and new in this genre. One a new heroine and two a level of writing which is less earnest than others in this field. This is written as a fast-paced romp for mainly for reader enjoyment and fun - not to expose any mega conspiracy theory.

It is really well researched and I sense from the level of detail that the author has been to each location. Some great details for tourists of both the planet and the mind.

This book is a great achievement for a first time novelist and I can see the whole series emerging (and films). Looking forward to finding more about the characters and the psychological aspects of theology.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really?! 13 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm writing this review in an attempt to balance the books. I purchased this novel on the strength of other reviews and, in search of some light relief, looked forward to a fast paced, well written thriller. Yes - it's faced paced but to the extent that the author appears to put all their energy into pace and very little effort into any other aspect of novel writing; character development, believable dialogue, compelling description, etc.

The narrative lurches from one incredulous occurrence to another requiring the reader to grab onto its coat tails and enjoy the ride. Sadly, I didn't.

I found Pentecost clunky, cliche ridden and, in short, lazy. This book makes Dan Brown look like a literary master (I enjoy his novels before you jump to the wrong conclusions) and is only likely to provide any satisfaction if you find yourself subjected to a long delay in an airport or train station. Looking for a revalation in thriller writing? Look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great read! 17 Dec 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Pentecost is a thriller that does exactly what it says on the tin. It reminded me very much of Indiana Jones - lots of action but plenty of history, religion and solving puzzles thrown in. I'd definitely recommend it, and have already downloaded the next book in the trilogy. For a debut novel, it's a fantastic start, although I found the American spellings a bit distracting, especially as the author is English! That said, it doesn't detract from a brilliantly told story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow down, I want to get -- wait, no I don't... 23 Aug 2012
By Dean
Format:Kindle Edition
One of my many criteria for books that I read for enjoyment is page-turn-ability, i.e. it makes me want to read it all in one go; the first book in the ARKANE series by J.F. Penn more than meets this need.

Morgan Sierra is a kick-ass individual with Israeli Special Forces training. If you need the comparison, she falls somewhere between Indiana Jones and Dan Brown's Robert Langdon, combining esoteric knowledge about religions and their psychology with the ability to take on the violent baddies on their own terms.

Wrenched from her quiet practice in Oxford, Morgan and ruggedly handsome ARKANE agency operative Jake Timber are forced on a quest to find twelve stones taken from the tomb of Jesus Christ by the twelve apostles after Christ's ascension into Heaven. Known as the "Pentecost stones", the artifacts are alleged to contain great power on their own, even more when put together. And there are at least two camps willing to go to any lengths to obtain them.

Morgan and her sister have two of the stones, given to them by their parents and, in order to motivate Morgan to find the stones, her sister and niece are hostages in the grasp of a powerful man.

ARKANE is an academic research collective on the surface; as Morgan's quest progresses, she finds it has an official mission to find dangerous religious artefacts to keep them falling into the wrong hands and the resources to match the mission.

As I said before, the pace of this first novel is just right, pushing things along while informing the reader at the same time. I'd say Penn knows what she's talking about when it comes to religion and the way individuals can become obsessed with religious ideas and the way the world works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first novel 6 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this book on the strength of a recommendation of Amazon, and I was not disappointed. This is a well researched and thought out novel, with good characters and good story line. A cross between Indiana Jones and Dan Brown but a whole lot better. The story centres around Morgan and Jake tracking down the stones of the Apostles to prevent the coming Pentecost and save Morgans sister and niece. The only criticism I would have is that they seemed to find and retrieve the stones a little to easily, but this did not distract from the story. A great first effort and have already downloaded the sequel.
