Product Description

A power, kept secret for 2000 years. A brotherhood, broken by murder. A woman who stands to lose everything. When Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead, the Apostles took stones from his tomb as a symbol of their brotherhood. At Pentecost, the fire of the Holy Spirit empowered the stones and the Apostles performed miracles in God's name. Forged in the fire and blood of the Christian martyrs, the Pentecost stones were handed down through generations of Keepers who kept their power and locations secret. Until now. The Keepers are being murdered, the stones stolen by those who would use them for evil in a world transformed by religious fundamentalism. Oxford University psychologist Morgan Sierra is forced into the search when her sister and niece are held hostage. She is joined by Jake Timber from the mysterious ARKANE, a British government agency specializing in para- normal and religious experience. From ancient Christian sites in Spain, Italy and Israel to the far reaches of Iran and Tunisia, Morgan and Jake must track down the stones through the myths of the early church in a race against time before a new Pentecost is summoned, this time powered by the fire of evil.

Pentecost is gripping from the start with a chase down an alleyway leading to being burnt alive on a pyre.

The story then jumps to Oxford where a psychologist spiritualist who investigates belief in the supernatural is living her life and the action just doesn't stop which is amazing when it takes place within the university walls.

Pentecost is a well researched book which barely pauses between action packed scenes. I enjoyed this book and just had to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. It was very enjoyable.

Pentecost is quite simply a great read. A fresh look at a familiar genre which is dominated by men. I don't think it would be overstating the case to describe Morgan Sierra as a Lara Croft for a new generation. The comparisons with work by Dan Brown are almost inevitable and the research and detail comes through brilliantly, turning each scene, each location, into a real place in the readers mind.

Joanna's writing is wonderfully fresh and this reviewer can barely wait for Prophecy to be completed and published.

Camel Club Move Over!!! 3 Feb 2011

Camel Club Move Over!!

If you enjoy a fast-paced thriller that brings an intriguing mix of history and fiction, then Pentecost by Joanna Penn should be on your list of "must reads".

For a first novel attempt, Joanna Penn should be congratulated on weaving a darn-good story. The Pentecost experience in the Bible is one of the most pivotal moments in the telling of the Gospel. Penn has crafted an intriguing play on that story that keeps the reader's attention throughout. Readers are taken on a pulsating journey through some of the most significant cities in Christian history as they follow the undaunted efforts of heroin Morgan Sierra. Sierra is a main character you instantly begin to appreciate as an intellectually gifted and physically capable heroine. Penn should be applauded for developing such a capable heroine moving away from the typical male bravado that's used to characterize the heroes in most current-day thrillers. Overall, Pentecost has all the necessary elements to be called a page-turner. This is a good read!!

Ultimately Penn leaves a nice set-up which makes the reader wonder if we'll see more from Morgan Sierra and the secretive ARKANE organization. I can only hope so. Congratulations Joanna Penn on a truly enjoyable read.

Religious thriller from a new fiction author 25 Jan 2011
By MKT - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Joanna Penn has written non-fiction and blogs regularly at TheCreativePenn.com. This book is her first work of fiction, a religious thriller that spins a web of fast-paced action. The story blends intriguing facts and myths about the twelve apostles with modern-day fanatics who search for the keys to unlock the powerful force of Pentecost. In addition to her main characters, Morgan and Jake, Penn includes an old monk, some quirky scientists and enough evil men to keep us worried until the very end. While the story begins in India, the author also takes us to Tabriz, Jerusalem, Rome, Amalfi and other places where Christianity first spread its message. If you like Kate Mosse or Kathleen McGowan, you should give Pentecost a read!

Pentecost Thrills and Chills 2 May 2011
By AnnabelCandy - Published on Amazon.com

Let's face it, when you go up against that other religious thriller by Dan Brown you expect to come up with criticism. Yet while there are always points of improvement (but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a tight final edit) I have to give this a rave review.

Author Joanna Penn has a Masters in Theology from Oxford University no less and really knows her subject matter inside out. The story pulls together that knowledge and unique locations around the world to make you wonder if this really is fiction or if there could be some element of truth to the myths surrounding the Pentecost stones.

Penn shares where some of her ideas come from at the end of the book but even then I'm still left wondering about the blurred lines between reality and fiction!

I love that Pentecost has a smart, gutsy heroine - we can never have enough of them. This is one of those rare thrillers where all the elements of a gripping thriller combine to make it just that. I look forward to seeing how the rest of the series develops.
