Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The smc PENTAX-DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL[IF]SDM wide angle zoom lens delivers the highest level of optical quality and includes SDM technology for fast, accurate, quiet focus. Bringing together advanced optical technologies, including aspherical elements, special optical-glass elements and original lens coatings, these new interchangeable lenses are superior to any existing lens series in terms of contrast, clarity and edge-to-edge sharpness.

Product Description

Specially designed for Pentax digital reflex cameras, the Zoom DA* smc 50-135mm f/2,8 ED AL [IF] SDM lens belongs to the ultrasonic DA* high-performance lens line. With a 2x zoom factor and a focal range from 80 to 200 mm (equivalent 24x36), this standard zoom lens is extremely versatile and as well-adapted to portrait photographs as it is to backgrounds or even sports photos. A special treatment has been applied to reduce internal parasitic light. Benefiting from what is the best in the domain of optical technology, the Zoom DA* smc 50-135mm f/2,8 ED AL [IF] SDM lens integrates 2 ED lenses with a low dispersion index and 3 aspherical lenses for optimum contrast and brightness rendering as well as never-before-seen richness in detail. With a breakthrough SDM (Super Direct-drive Motor) focus, this lens uses ultrasonic motorisation for surprising speed and silent operation. Plus, the “Quick Shift” mode lets you change to manual focus mode at any time. In addition, the Zoom DA* smc 50-135mm f/2,8 ED AL [IF] SDM lens includes several waterproof joints and an SP (Super Protect) lens surface treatment for exemplary resistance to water and dust. Offering amazing optical quality and an unrivalled manageability, the Zoom DA* smc 50-135mm f/2,8 ED AL [IF] SDM lens will accompany your Pentax digital reflex in all circumstances, letting you enjoy its full potential.

Attention: the ultrasonic motorisation is only compatible with the K10D.

stunning lens 31 Mar 2008
For some years Pentax have produced "star" lenses (M*, A* etc) and now they have started producing the DA* lenses which include their "supersonic" SDM focusing motor (you sometimes have to upgrade the firmware on your camera to take advantage of this, although the older focussing system will still work). This lens is fast (f2.8) and as a result a little heavy, but gives utterly stunning results: very sharp, clean and undistorted. Their have been some reports in the literature of bad examples (mainly focussing issues) but mine has worked flawlessly. The autofocus doesn't seem much faster than the old system, but is almost silent. I am now saving up for the DA* 16-50mm. It is great to Pentax starting to produce good top quality gear once more after some years of producing less than wonderful kit.

Top quality Image. 15 Sep 2009
This is a real beautiful lens to use The image quality matches the prime lenses that I own, unlike the much cheaper Pentax Kit Zooms or the 18mm-250mm zoom.
