5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality Camera 10 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Thought about this model over the Nikon D50, D70s & Canon 350D. Excellent build quality (a steel chassis that the others dont have) and the pictures are fantastic. It is really very easy to use. The *ist DL has lots of useful features, including built in filters like B&W. You don't need any more than 6mp unless you're going to print larger than A3. The camera allows creativity and experimentation and is cheaper than the others. The 2.5in LCD is great, but can eat normal batteries - get the adaptor for when you're downloading or printing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good piece of kit 3 Oct 2006
I got this to replace my 20 year old Pentax Super A. It made sense to be able to use the golf bag of various lenses and wotnots that accumulate over the years.I took the thing out for a test drive in Sandringham early on a sunny Sunday morning with the deliberate aim of giving at as many difficult situations to cope with as I could find. I came home incredibly impressed with the camera and it's facilities. Easy to use and adjust. If you're feeling lazy a range of auto options all seem to work well. If you're feeling techy, you can do pretty much anything you like to the image recording in-camera. I have yet to fault it. I am 6'7" and have enormous hands and it's comfy. Gave it to my 5'5" mum to try and she found it easy, light and comfy. Adjustments are easy to make and the screen is OK. It's not easy to see in bright conditions, however. You have to be careful fitting manual focus lenses. Always remember to set the focus switch. I've found the mount can "snag" and takes time and patience to release if you don't. Only real criticism I've got is the Pentax software that comes with it- it's pretty...er...basic. I don't bother with it at all after a brief wander around in it and use Roxio for basic functions. I added the AF360 flash gun which is quite astounding as a piece of kit. Overall, a good, easy to use and flexible camera and not overpriced if you shop around a bit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps I expect too much 15 Aug 2006
For the last couple of years I have been using a Canon A70 compact camera (3.2 MP) and I've been very happy with it. Prior to that I did a lot of 35mm photography using a Pentax MX SLR.

With prices dropping I thought it was time to enter the world of digital SLR photography and being a 'Pentax' man I naturally went for this product.

I am impressed with the features and abilities of this camera but I have one slight concern - I rather fancy the pictures could be a bit sharper than they are. Of course this is only a subjective assessment.

As far as batteries are concerned ( see review above) I find the Pentax much lighter on batteries than I expected. I invested in some 2700mAh NiMH rechargeables and they are doing very well. (The camera uses AA size batteries so you should never be stuck for power.)

I am able to use my existing Pentax SMC K mount lenses with this camera (one of my reasons for choosing it) although only in manual mode.
