Product Description

Product Description

Versatile optical 26X zoom lens with 22.3mm ultra-wide-angle coverage to accommodate diversified subjects

Within its compact, easy-to-carry body, the PENTAX X-5 features a high-magnification optical 26-times zoom lens offering focal-length coverage from 22.3mm ultra-wide angle to 580mm super telephoto (in the 35mm format). Coupled with the 1cm Macro mode, which lets the photographer capture dramatic close-up images of a subject from just one centimetre away, it offers quick, effortless shooting in a wide range of photographic situations. It also provides the Intelligent Zoom function, which extends the camera’s zoom coverage to approximately 187.2 times (for a focal length of 4174mm in the 35mm format) without compromising image quality.

Back-illuminated CMOS image sensor to optimise image quality in high-sensitivity shooting

The X-5 incorporates a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. With its top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and approximately 16.0 effective megapixels, it demonstrates remarkable high-sensitivity, low-noise characteristics and assures high-speed image data readout to deliver super-high-resolution images. The X-5 also features a state-of-the-art imaging engine. Supported by the latest Super Resolution technology, this engine offers outstanding image-processing performance to produce clear, high-quality images with well-defined details. In addition, its unique Handheld Night Scene shooting mode helps the photographer capture a blur-free night-time image by taking multiple images at once and synthesising them into a single composite picture.

Dual Shift Shake Reduction

Dual shake-reduction system to assure sharp, blur-free images

The X-5’s dual shake-reduction system couples the PENTAX-developed sensor-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism with a digital SR mode to more effectively compensate for annoying camera shake. This hybrid system assures the photographer of sharp, blur-free images even under demanding, camera-shake-prone shooting conditions, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting with incident light only in poorly lit locations, or photographing sunset scenes.

3inch Tiltable LCD Screen

Large, tilt-able LCD monitor

The X-5 comes equipped with a large 3.0-inch, high-definition LCD monitor with approximately 460,000 dots. Its tilt-able construction allows the photographer to tilt the monitor up and down and set it at angle easiest for viewing. It also provides a clear view of images and menus displayed on the screen to assure a quick, effortless check of recorded images and swift, error-free setting changes.

Electronic Viewfinder

Electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment for clear view of the subject even under bright sunshine

The X-5 features an electronic viewfinder, which comes in handy when shooting a subject in harsh backlight or when the photographer needs a more solid hold of the camera. Its diopter adjustment mechanism assures the user of the clearest view of both subject and viewfinder display, while minimising eye fatigue during extended shooting sessions.

Full HD-standard movie recording for extended recording of high-quality movies

The X-5 features the Full HD movie recording function employing the H-264 recording format. The user can capture high-quality; extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. It also offers creative movie playback features, such as High-speed Movie mode for slow-motion playback and Time-lapse Movie mode for fast-forward playback. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also provided on the camera body for the output of recorded movies and sound to external devices.

Powered by AA batteries

Since the X-5 is powered by four AA-size batteries, there’s no worry about battery shortages, even when on the road. Thanks to its power-efficient design, the X-5 can capture approximately 330 images with a fresh set of alkaline batteries, eliminating the need for frequent battery changes, particularly in the middle of important shooting sessions.

User-friendly Auto Picture mode for hands-off selection of the best shooting mode

The X-5 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode, which automatically assesses the subject’s conditions and selects the most appropriate shooting mode from 16 distinctive shooting modes, including Landscape, Portrait, Candlelight and Pet. It even comes with the Auto Macro function, which automatically switches the focus mode to Macro when it detects the subject positioned a short distance away.

Quick-set mode dial for delay-free selection of a desired shooting mode

The X-5 lets the user quickly and effortlessly select the desired shooting mode — from a total of 10 modes including the hands-off Auto Picture, Scene, Program, Manual, Landscape and Handheld Night Snap — with a single turn of the mode dial, without having to access the on-screen menu.

In purchasing a new camera, I had two main criteria to balance - firstly, that it must be able to take good quality photographs of our baby; and secondly, that it should be able to take reasonable to good quality video footage. Anything else was really going to be a bonus, perhaps with the exception of budget, which was not to exceed £200. With these factors in mind, I set about researching cameras on Amazon that met these criteria, and had received a good quantity of positive reviews.

I almost wrote off the Pentax X-5 based on the fact that there were only a few (albeit good) reviews - I am very glad that I did not, and it took me a while to realise why I was having difficulty finding reviews and sample photos - the camera had only been released in September 2012! Having researched a bit more into this camera, including looking up sample photos, online video reviews and forum comments, I was quickly persuaded that this bridge camera would be the way to go - just looking at the 1cm Macro sample photos of insects flashed images into my head about being the next David Attenborough, and the optical zoom range had me daydreaming about snapping birds for the latest countryfile calendar! Combined with the possibilily of FULL HD 1080p video recording, I was sold!

So, what do I think of the camera now that I have purchased it? In a sentence - it has surpassed (and continues to surpass) my expectations. It easily ticks my two intitial requirements, and there are so may extra features onboard (requiring a manual on CD of over 200 pages) that I will be discovering them for days after - just today I experimented with slow-motion (albeit at 30fps and 640 x 400 resolution), timelapse, panoramic photographs, and post-photograph filters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had bought one earlier 28 Oct 2012
Colour Name:Silver
I have always loved my old film SLR. And even with, digital versions being available for some time now, I have never been convinced by them: either I had to navigate through a complex menu to get to the settings I wanted or the purchase of a DSLR would have left me seriously out of pocket.

Two weeks ago, I finally took the plunge and went for the Pentax X-5. The main selling points for me were that there are specific buttons to adjust the white balance and shoot mode (drive v. single shot), and that the camera takes standard AA batteries that are easily available. When comparing to pricier models (Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm), I still had to navigate through different menus for quite some time before I could make adjustments - and when taking pictures you want to spend time on the shot, not the menu.

The camera arrived just in time for my trip to India, and it has been absolutely brilliant so far. The shake reduction has been great for taking pics on the move, be it out of a car window or from the back of a tuk tuk. The simplicity with which you can make adjustments to cater for the lighting has been fab and has allowed me to take some great shots in the mountains.

Granted the AA batteries do not last as long - all in all I had to change them after four days heavy use, but I could get replacement batteries (for pennies) even in some very remote locations in the Indian countryside - and only had to buy new ones because I forgot my spare set of rechargeable ones.

All in all, the perfect camera for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff! 10 Mar 2013
Colour Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If all you want from a camera is point and click convenience you can spend much less than the (currently discounted) price of the Pentax X5, but even the least technically minded photographer is going to be missing out on quite a lot. Not being the most technically minded photographer I will concentrate on the experience of using the camera rather than the specifications, not least because if you understand such things you'll understand them from reading the details of the product above the reviews and won't need your time wasted by reviewers wishing to get all technical on you.

Okay then...I find the sculpting of the hand grip of the X5 allows the camera to sit comfortably perfectly balanced on the fingers you grip it with while you wait for the photo moment you're waiting for to arrive. The 16 megapixel images the camera captures are clean and crisp and the colour definition is quite breathtaking. Experimenting with the manual features may give you the particular effects you desire your pictures to have but, if you are like me and basically take an "apply the 'bisect the thirds' rule to whatever is being shot and you end up with a well balanced image" approach, the results of relying on auto focus and auto flash are impressive enough by themselves to justify a purchase. And there is something about holding a camera of this design that makes you feel like you can take on the world (photographically speaking) because unlike the experience of using a much cheaper camera or your phone, you're holding something that not only makes you look like a more serious photographer, it makes you feel like one too.
