Product Description

The PENTAX WG-3 GPS model features advanced GPS functions to record position data and travel log data onto captured images along with a pressure/altitude/depth gauge, a digital compass and a wireless recharging system — to facilitate outdoor shooting.

Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting to 14 meters deep, and up to two continuous hours

By further enhancing the watertight capability of the camera body, PENTAX has upgraded the WG-3 GPS’s underwater performance to 14 meters, compared to 12 meters for its predecessor, and for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX8 or JIS Class 8 waterproof performance). This camera is also designed to be highly shock-resistant, dustproof, cold-resistant, and crushproof. All these features make the WG-3 GPS a dependable, heavy-duty imaging camera for harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.

4X optical zoom lens with maximum aperture of F2.0 and 25mm wide-angle coverage

The newly designed optical zoom lens offers a maximum aperture of F2.0 to capture bright, clear images with minimal noise, even under dimly lit underwater conditions. With its four-times zoom coverage from 4.5mm to 18mm (equivalent to approx. 25mm wide angle to approx. 100mm medium telephoto in the 35mm format); this versatile zoom lens accommodates a wide range of applications from macro shooting of flowers to wide-angle shooting of spectacular landscapes. The camera’s Intelligent Zoom function also extends the zoom range to approximately 28.8 times to cover the focal length of an approximately 720mm super-telephoto lens (in the 35mm format) to capture extra-high-magnification images without compromising image quality.

High-performance, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor

The WG-3 GPS comes equipped with a state-of-the-art, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which is superior in high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics to conventional sensors and assures high-speed readout of image data signals. Coupled with a new-generation imaging engine, this image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with 16.0 effective megapixels. This model also provides an advanced image processing function made possible by the latest super-resolution technology to assure sharp and clear images. The WG-3 GPS even offers such innovative features as a Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures four images of the same scene and produces a single blur-free, composite image from them.

Dual anti-shake protection for sharp, blur-free images

The WG-3 GPS’s dual shake reduction system combines an image-sensor-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism with a Digital SR mode to more effectively compensate for the adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake in shake-prone conditions, such as when capturing poorly lit subject with ambient light only, or when shooting sunset scenes.

Six LED Macro Lights to assist close-up shooting

By positioning six LED Macro Lights around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, the WG-3 GPS provides brighter, more uniform illumination on the subject when the Digital Microscope mode is selected. With the Macro Lights, the user can clearly see a magnified view of a microscopic world often unnoticeable with the naked eye on the camera’s LCD monitor and effortlessly capture eye-catching images. In order to minimize camera shake and subject shake, the instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. In addition, the Macro Lights can provide other user-friendly features, such as a Self-Portrait Assist mode to check if the subject’s face is safely captured within the picture frame using the blink of an LED lamp, and a LED lighting mode to use the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.

Full HD movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies

The WG-3 GPS provides Full HD movie recording employing the H.264 recording format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. They also feature a high-speed camera function for slow-motion playback of captured movie clips and a fast-forward movie function to simplify creative movie techniques. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also provided on the camera body for simultaneous output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external devices.

Extra-large, high-resolution, wide-frame 3.0-inch LCD monitor

The WG-3 GPS model incorporates an extra-large, high-resolution 3.0-inch colour LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions and approximately 460,000 dots. The PENTAX-original AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections to assure a sharp, clear on-screen image even under harsh sunshine, while its wide-view design offers a clear view of the monitor from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, making it particularly useful in low and high angle shooting.

Advanced GPS functions and pressure/altitude/depth gauge to facilitate outdoor shooting

The WG-3 GPS comes equipped with a sophisticated GPS module, which automatically records position data and travel log data onto captured images and adjusts the built-in clock to local time. Thanks to newly incorporated pressure sensor and digital compass, the user can not only check the pressure, altitude/underwater depth and direction of a shooting location, but also record such data onto captured images for future reference.

Wireless recharging

The WG-3 GPS is compatible with the wireless Qi (inductive power standard) recharging system, which automatically recharges the built-in battery simply by placing the camera on a Qi-compatible commercial wireless recharger. Since this system eliminates the need to open and close the battery chamber cover, it greatly reduces the risk of foreign substances such as sand and dust clinging to special water seals installed in the cover.

Other features

The Pentax WG-3 GPS comes with a Sub-display on the front panel to indicate time, pressure and altitude. It also has two remote control receptors (one in front and another on the back) to widen signal coverage and a Digital level to check the camera’s horizontal/vertical inclination.

I bought this to replace an old Canon PowerShot that had had a hammering over several years of outside work in all sorts of environments. A waterproof compact with GPS seemed an excellent idea. I've used it heavily outdoors since purchase and it's been a mixed bag of experiences.

First the less than good...

Although it's QI charging you only get a normal power cable so if you are a heavy user you are in and out of the waterproof door a lot...not least because the power source is a small rechargeable battery. So battery life and charging are now an issue for me...sadly this is often on site and away from power. And opening the waterproof door all the time is bound to have an affect on the seal eventually. You can avoid this by buying a QI charger and an Eye Fi card...yeah...more to buy lol.

It is very robustly built and there are grand claims made for its ability to take impact and compression. I don't doubt them, but the lens has no cover and the big plastic screen is easily not as tough as they'd like you to think.

It comes with a fancy strap which looks lovely but is impractical and likely to scratch the plastic screen so it was the first thing to be replaced!

The tripod thread is at the extreme right hand side of the body which can make it unsteady on small tripods or at least more fiddling to balance and line up well.

The good...

Some people here complained about colour and styling however I found this a bit odd as it is perfectly shaped for wet hands and the purple colour is easy to spot in the grass etc. So for me this is full marks.

The wide angle lens is excellent although you can run the risk of getting your fingers in the picture if you don't hold it carefully.

I just used this camera on a trip to Cuba and I really liked it. It is easy to operate and there are plenty of options to create some interesting photos and videos. I particularly like the slow and fast motion ones.

It is ideal for beach or wet conditions, where water and sand are an issue for normal cameras, so recommended for beach holidays.

However, there is one HUGE letdown and that is the battery life. I have a couple of other cameras, both Sony, one of which is a bridge camera, and the battery on both these will last for well over two hours taking video and at least a whole day taking photos, and I take a lot of photos when I'm out. Very rarely have I had to change it the same day on these cameras. Different story on this Pentax

The Pentax battery seems to run down incredibly quickly. Take 20 -30 photos and you're looking at red warning light already. You definitely need to carry a spare at ALL times.

Also, even if turned off, the battery does run down quicker than any other camera I've ever owned.

The other thing I would suggest is, ditch the strap that comes with the camera and attach a proper wrist strap instead.

Apart from that, a fun camera to use in difficult weather conditions.

I have owned several models of this camera....and they just get better. The feel is solid, and good to hold / use. If you walk up mountains, want to take photos in snow / rain or on a beach and in the sea....this could be the camera for you to consider. There are other cameras that will do the job, but they don't have the look of this one. I'm not sure if I'll make daily use of the GPS function, but it's a useful addition...and the Altitude / Atmospheric pressure is something I'm using quite a bit. If you don't need these additions, buy the other'll still get the sharp photos and the (almost) bomb-proof usefulness of a great camera. Thoroughly recommended.

Going on a few trips this year so wanted a sturdy camera that can handle on the terrains. Before buying the camera i was really tossing up between this and the olympus tough tg-2. I know Ricoh launched a newer Wg4 and the olympus was launching a TG-3 but the price mark up for few extra functions just didn't tally up. (I bought this for £149 with £20 cashback from Pentax so effectively £129). It has the most amazing microscopic macro mode, and I know this is going to be a winner when I'm in the Amazon rainforest. It's a nice little camera, bit heavier than most compacts, but it's also reassuring that this is well built.

The image quality is great and for those complaining that is not to a good level - then they are not taking into consideration that this is a 'rugged' camera - you are paying for the function of it being able to work in all conditions and even take a few knocks and scrapes. of course other 'non-rugged' cameras in this price range probably do pack a better punch with image quality (if you're blowing image size right up), but if you wanted that image quality combined with the ruggedness then you're looking to pay at least 3 times the price, so it's a case of working out what is more important to your needs.

Also image quality can immediately be stepped up by going into the menu and tweaking things such as disabling digital zoom, (so you don't accidentally zoom into that horrible soft pixellated zone), also enabling the lowest ISO to be used as default will crisp up all images taken in good light and the obvious one of image quality.

So pleased I did my research and opted for this camrera - GPS is a nice touch too!
