Product Description

Product Description

The Pentax Optio S is an ultra compact high performance digital camera. Smaller than the size of an average credit or business card and just over 3/4 inch thick, the Optio S boasts a high-quality 3.2-megapixel resolution and 3x optical zoom lens in a sleekly designed, tough aluminium alloy body. A new "sliding lens" system allows this lens to move up, away, and fully flush with the camera frame to protect the lens and allow for its tiny dimensions. The camera also features a 1.6-inch colour TFT LCD screen with Histogram Display.

Featuring a 3.2-megapixel CCD sensor, the Optio S delivers images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels and prints up to 11 x 14 inches. The zooming capacity of the lenses is augmented with 2x digital zooming, which offers smooth operation and realises a combined zooming power of 6x zoom. It features a focal range of 5.8 to 17.4 mm (35 to 105 mm equivalent in 35 mm photography) and maximum aperture of f2.6-4.8.

Images can be stored in the internal 11 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia cards (MMC). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

In addition to taking still photos, the Optio S can also record movie clips of up to 30 seconds with audio at 12 frames per second. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative. The OptioS has been specially designed with audio recording capability rivalling the abilities of standalone audio-recording devices. This can be exceptionally handy for recording important information in meetings and an index can be added during recording for easy playback.

Additional features of the camera include a variety of shooting modes, such as program, picture mode, night scene, movie, panorama assist, 3-D image, digital filter and user. There are also picture modes including landscape, flower, portrait, self-portrait, surf and snow, autumn colour and sunset. White balance controls include TTL auto, pre-set and custom white balance, while autofocus can be adjusted with 7-point AF, spot AF, and infinity landscape mode.

The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included). It measures 3.3 x 2.0 x 0.8 inches and weighs 4.1 ounces. This package includes the Optio S digital camera, battery and battery charger, USB and A/V cables, hand strap, and CD-ROM with image software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

Manufacturer's Description

It has a width of 83mm, a height of just 52mm, and a depth of only 20mm. Small and light enough to take anywhere! This incredibly small size is realized only by the use of revolutionary PENTAX technology: the innovative Sliding Lens system and the miniaturization of the Multi-Chip Module (MCM).Take the OptioS in your hand, and the speed of its functions will thrill and surprise you. From the moment you turn it on to the time you're able to take your first photo is almost instantaneous; the shutter release time is only 0.01 seconds. The speed is perfect for allowing you to take the pictures you want when you want.Use the OptioS, and you will be both surprised and convinced by the quality of the pictures. The OptioS sports the renowned smc PENTAX zoom lens, known as an imaging standard. With the independently developed lens coating methods that work to favorably improve various chromatic aberrations, you will see images with high contrast levels and clarity. Furthermore, the OptioS offers excellent image quality with the power of 3.2 effective megapixels and the high-performance 3X optical zoom lens. And with approximately 11MB of memory built into the camera, you can save photo data even before you insert any media. The OptioS, with its extreme compact size and its promise of incredible resolution, exceeds all expectations for a digital camera. PENTAX has made it all possible. With a form and design that never fails to please, your happiness can only grow as you take it in hand and begin to take pictures with it.

A tiny gem of a camera 18 April 2003
I wanted a digital camera that was not only small but also had decent specifications so when I saw the pre-release information about the Optio S, it seemed to be the one for me. When I unpacked the camera, I was astonished by just how small it is - a mere 3 x 2 x 3/4 inches - at that size, I will be happy to have it tucked in my pocket wherever I go. The exterior casing appears to be of decent strength and construction - I have ordered a waterproof wallet to protect the camera from damage. The extent and number of menus, sub-menus and settings are initially mind boggling and mastering them requires patient study of the manual and a bit of practice. There are a number of very useful picture settings such as sunset, portrait etc. The main 4 way control button may prove difficult for anyone with fat stubby fingers but I found it easy to get used to. The picture quality is superb including those photos taken with use of the flash. The LCD display is tiny but amazingly clear. I haven't required the packaged software because, with my Apple Mac's iPhoto program, all do is plug in the USB cable, click "import" and it's done! I bought the Viking 64MB multi media card to top up the internal memory of 11MB. The low resolution of the movie mode results in rather poor quality but it's a fun option to have. The battery life is satisfactory and the battery only takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge. The only downside I've noticed is a slight gap between pressing the shutter button and the photograph being taken and so action shots could be missed. There is however a continuous shooting mode that on occasions is likely to prove useful. So far, I am delighted with this camera and amazed at the technology that allows so much to be packed into such a tiny unit.

Not knowing much about digital cameras, I chose this camera after getting advice from a friend, and I haven't been disappointed. Not only is it smaller than the size of a playing card, but the picture quality is out of this world. My photos have crystal clear definition and rich colours, something I could only have dreamed of before going digital. The camera comes with 11MB of memory, but take my advice and invest in a memory card at least 256MB, so you're not out of memory at the vital moment.

The menu functions are clear and easy to use, although the 4-way button with "OK" in the middle is a little fiddly, but shouldnt pose too many problems. The zoom is also very good, together with the auto focus.
If you're looking for a great digi camera and can afford it, buy this one. If you can't afforsd this one, keep saving, you won't be disappointed.

Mighty Mouse! 22 April 2003
By Melly
I have been a digital camera user for some years using a Fuji Finepix 4900. However, as I want to do some work using candid shots ( i am an artist, not a photographer)I needed a truely compact camera to keep in my pocket at all times. After considerable research, I chose the Pentax Optio s and have been amazed by the results. The camera is very small-light and unobtrusive and yet it feels sturdy enough. However I wouldn't recommend it to someone with fat fingers! Basic use and control is mainly intuitive for an experienced user, but it is a steep learning curve to master the more complex features, of which there are many. To assist, the instruction manual is excellent. I miss the digital viewfinder of the Fuji for some shots, but the LCD is very clear and bright, even though my reading specs have to be employed for detailed analysis. Even though there is some embedded memory I bought a 256mb card to go with it, so I doubt that i will ever run out. Battery use seems very good so far- I played for hours over a weekend and it kept on going. The ability to record sound bites for shots might be useful...
My only criticism so far is that the instant review time for images is max 5 secs, which means instant decisions are needed. The results are impressive and easy to download - I fear the Fuji might gather dust from now on!
