Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Pentax has been a leader in the photographic field for many years. Many Pentax innovations have become standards in the industry. Pentax's enthusiasm and devotion towards the development of high-quality products have thrived over the years and continues to be stronger than ever.

Product Description

This is a compact and lightweight SMC DA zoom lens from Pentax for all of the company's popular digital SLR cameras (but not film models), plus the derivative Samsung GX models. The useful zoom range is equivalent to around 27-82mm, covering wide angle, standard and short telephoto/portrait focal lengths, plus of course all those in between. Focusing is automatic or manual down to 0.25m (10 inches) at all focal lengths, for a maximum reproduction ratio of almost 1:3 or one third life size at 55mm. Automatic diaphragm and full aperture metering with mechanical and electrical contacts respectively, for full compatibility with all exposure and metering modes. Maximum aperture is f/3.5-5.6, stopping down to f/22-38 for maximum depth of field. Pentax SMC (Super Multi Coated) glass for reduced flare, with aspherical (AL) design for optimum quality, with 12 elements in 9 groups. Standard 52mm filter thread which does not rotate when focusing or zooming.

Earlier this year I managed to find a new old stock Pentax K100D complete with this lens. What a bargain, only £[] post paid! This is cracking piece of kit. I took the camera and this lens on holiday to Tuscany in June. The quality of the resulting photographs stunned me. Used to a compact camera it just doesn't compare. If you dear reader are passionate about photography I implore you give uo the convenience of your compact camera, do some research and buy a goood DSLR. Your efforts will be rewarded. I give the 18-55 10 out of 10.

This lens is pretty perfect for a day out taking photos when you don't want a heavy bag or lots of mucking about with changing lenses. The zoom range is lovely for wide angle shots of scenery or crowds or anything, and steady enough to keep it at a particular zoom level (my favourite is 50mm) for portraiture instead of a prime lens. Although I do use a long zoom (70-300mm) for detail shots, gigs and wildlife, the reason many pentax cameras come with this one as a kit lens to me is obvious because of the quality of the shots you get with such a smooth zoom and - as even the bad review says - the usefulness of the range. I am very loyal to Pentax but having used old vintage Nikon lenses, Leicas, and Sigma I do think Pentax optics are some of the best out there, and this little basic lens is no exception.
