PENTAX Optio WS80

Within its compact body, the Optio WS80 offers a number of advanced, user-friendly features. These include: the assurance of high-quality, high-resolution image reproduction thanks to 10.0 effective megapixels; 5 x Optical zoom lens; a large 2.7 inch LCD monitor; HDTV-proportioned movie recording; and a state-of-the-art Face Recognition function. Its airtight body also allows underwater photography to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to two hours continuously. This eliminates worries in situations where water or dirt can be a concern, such as outdoor events, in the garden or kitchen, or on a rainy day.

Exceptional waterproof performance for worry-free underwater shooting
Despite its compact, palm-sized body, the Optio WS80 assures reliable waterproof performance conforming to IPX 8 (or JIS Class 8) standards, allowing underwater photography at a depth of 1.5 meters for up to two hours continuously. It also features the PENTAX-exclusive, highly water-repellent SP (Super Protect) coating on the protective glass element installed at the front end of the zoom lens. As a result, the Optio WS80 can be simply rinsed clean with fresh water if it becomes covered with dirt or sand. Coupled with remarkable dustproof capabilities equivalent to JIS Class 6, the Optio WS80 can be used without worry in many different situations where water or dirt can be a major concern, including water and winter sports.

High-speed Face Recognition, with a range of user-friendly features
The Optio WS80’s advanced Face Recognition AF & AE function comes in handy for casual shooting of people. This user-friendly function not only captures 32 faces in sharp focus and perfect exposure in a mere 0.03 seconds, but can even accurately detect a subject standing diagonally to the camera, or one with a tilted head. The Optio WS80 also offers other user-friendly features, including: the Small Face filter, which makes the subject’s face appear smaller in proportion to the body than it actually is, to produce attractive, well-balanced portraits; the Smile Capture mode, which automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile; and the Blink Detection function, which warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

2.5 LCD Monitor

2.7-inch high-brightness color
LCD monitor

Large 2.7 inch LCD monitor for effortless image viewing
Despite its compact body, the Optio WS80 features a large 2.7 inch high-brightness colour LCD monitor, which allows the photographer to view on-screen images and menus with great comfort and facilitates mode-setting and other camera operations - during both shooting and playback.

High-quality HDTV-proportioned movie recording
The Optio WS80 captures beautiful, flawless movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels)* at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. It also comes equipped with advanced, user-friendly features designed to facilitate movie recording: the Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode, which automatically compensates camera shake during movie shooting; and the Underwater Movie mode, which automatically optimizes all camera settings for underwater movie shooting.

* When the Optio WS80’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output as normal image-size data. If the user wishes to play back movie clips at high-definition-TV proportions (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.

Triple anti-shake protection to prevent different types of camera shake

Pixel Track SR mode
When recording still images, the Optio WS80’s new Digital SR (Shake Reduction) mode effectively compensates for camera shake by processing affected images.

High-Sensitivity SR mode
When it detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, the Optio WS80 automatically raises its sensitivity to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed. This effectively minimizes the adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake under poor lighting conditions. Selecting the High-Sensitivity SR mode fixes the recording size to 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels)

2.5 LCD Monitor

High-performance 5 x optical
zoom lens

Movie SR mode***
During movie recording, the Optio WS80 prevents blurry images by effectively minimizing annoying camera shake through the use of exclusive software. When in Movie SR mode you get a narrower angle of view than when in normal shooting.

High-performance 5 x optical zoom lens
Despite its compact dimensions, the Optio WS80 features a 5 x optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 35mm to 175mm in the 35mm format. It also offers the Intelligent Zoom function, which extends the zoom range up to approximately 28.5 times for even tighter zooming in on the subject.

Having owned a Pentax before I bought this with good expectations.

However, I was sorely disappointed. As another reviewer has said the indoor and low light photos are terrible. They were grainy, out of focus and it took 3 or 4 attempts to get a half decent shot.

I too have returned the camera, and will stick to my Olympus 500wp for waterproof shots!

I bought this handy little camera for my snorkeling trip, and it's been great. It has a an underwater photo and underwater movie mode which you can easily switch between whilst snorkeling. It can generally be quite tricky with any camera to see exactly what you are taking underwater depending on the brightness of the sunlight, however I got around this by sometimes taking short video clips of the fish as there is an easy edit function allowing you to take a still from any of the frames within the video.(Note that the quality is not as good as a proper shot though). This meant I got to pick the perfect frame to use as my picture when the fish weren't still enough or it was too bright to see the screen.
The battery life seemed OK, as I took lots of videos/pictures and spent time replaying back and editing, and only charged it a few times in a week.
The video quality is good, as are the pictures. I also used the camera to take normal outdoor holiday snaps and it was good for that too, with plenty of modes to choose from.

The only negative would be that there is no lens protection,(no sliding cover when you switch it off), so I had to use a case to protect it. Also no eye viewfinder if this is a problem for you, although not a problem for me underwater.

This is the first time I have ever written a review, but I just had to leave one for this camera. My boyfriend bought me one for my birthday in April (I wanted it for our holiday in August).
However the first time I took it out I realised that there was a strange glare on all the photos. We discovered that there was a crack on the inside of the lens. We sent this one back and it was replaced. This one duly got taken on holiday. However first time snorkeling and it filled up like a sieve! Literally everywhere - the battery compartment, lens and screen.
I had tried the first camera in small amounts of water, but not the second one. By the time our three week holiday was up we could not return it. Worse was the fact that I couldn't take any of the beautiful photographs I had been dreaming of on holiday.
I think that there must be some serious issues with the build quality of this camera.

Simply a splendid little camera. Took it to Nepal last year when I kayaked the Sun Kosi river that comes off Everest. Great images on the river and of the shrines in Kathmandu. There are probably better cameras but this one did it for me.

For what I got it for, taking pictures whilst snorkelling it works quite well. However the regular pictures, compared to a much cheaper canon A480 (out of water of course), always appear slightly "burned", missing detail in the highlights, and too noisy, especially when flash is needed. But, if you want decent underwater pictures, the combination of price and quality is quite hard to beat.

We bought this camera for going on a snorkelling holiday to the Red Sea, and it's admittedly a gorgeous wee camera. We had some initial problems getting it to save the time and date info but that might have been down to us not doing something since it eventually sorted itself out. It had very clear menus, the best I've seen on a digital camera, so very easy to choose between the various settings.

We took some very nice photos whilst snorkelling but on day 6 of our 2 week holiday the camera flooded completely and was rendered useless. Very, very disappointing as you can imagine!!! :-(

If only they'd sort out this waterproof issue as this is the 3rd camera (an Olympus still and a Panasonic camcorder the other two) we've had to let in water ... and we're only ever using them snorkelling, so just under the surface not metres down.
Don't really know what the answer is??!!

Anyway, only 1 star as the camera is winging it's way back to Amazon as I write!

Pentax Optio WS80 Waterproof Digital Camera - Yellow/Green (10MP, 5 x Optical Zoom) 2.7 inch Screen

I have used many disposable film cameras snorkelling this camera is light years ahead of those. You will get better results with practise I only had mine a few days before a trip to the Caribbean but I am an experienced photographer.

No problems with any sort of leak I took photos and videos down to about 5 metres. Flash underwater was great for attracting fish. This is what I bought the camera for but I have been very impressed with general quality and it is so small I carry it when out running and no longer miss wildlife shot opportunities!

Example photos posted include a macro shot of a bumble bee on a flower, underwater shot of a black and yellow Angel Fish which was attracted back by the flash feature.

I have taken many indoor still shots but I have taken many video clips of my infant grandsons all of good quality. I expect the flash quality will be no better than that of any fixed flash on a camera when used indoors.
