Manufacturer's Description

The PENTAX Optio WG-2

Manufacturers Description

The PENTAX Optio WG-2 digital compact camera, in addition to its outdoor-friendly waterproof, dustproof and shock-resistant construction, the heavy-duty model offers much-improved image quality in high-sensitivity shooting and Full HD movie recording capability. Equipped with the latest back-illuminated CMOS image sensor and a state-of-the-art imaging engine, the Optio WG-2 performs superbly in high-sensitivity shooting, such as when shooting at night or at poorly illuminated indoor sports arenas delivering much clearer, sharper images with minimized noise than previous models. With 16 effective megapixels, the WG-2 also offers high-resolution Full HD movie recording (1920 x 1080 pixels). Coupled with a new wide, high-resolution LCD monitor assuring effortless viewing of captured images even under the bright sun, and outstanding underwater shooting capability of up to a depth of 12 meters, the Optio WG-2 performs dependably and brilliantly even under demanding outdoor conditions.

Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting to 12 m

By further enhancing the water tightness of the camera body, PENTAX has upgraded the Optio WG-2's underwater performance to 12 meters, for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX8 or JIS Class 8 waterproof performance). This camera is also designed to be highly shock-resistant (from a height of 1.5 meters), dustproof, cold-resistant (down to -10°C), and crushproof (with a weight up to 100 kg). All these features make the Optio WG-2 the ideal imaging partner in harsh, demanding shooting conditions.

New back-illuminated CMOS image sensor for high-quality images

The Optio WG-2 comes equipped with the latest back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which offers much lower noise even when camera is set to higher sensitivities. With the combination of a top sensitivity of ISO 6400, 16 effective megapixels, and its new imaging engine, those models deliver super-high-resolution images. The Optio WG2 also features the new Handheld Night Snap mode, which captures four images of the same scene, then produces a single blur-free, composite image from them all automatically.

The Optio WG-2 offers the Full HD movie recording function employing the H.264 recording format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. It also features a high-speed camera function for slow-motion playback of captured movie clips and an interval movie function to simplify advanced movie-recording techniques. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also provided on the camera body allowing output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external devices.

Extra-large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor

New Optio WG-2 features a new extra-large, high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor with wide 16:9 proportions and 460,000 dots. The AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections to assure a sharp, clear on-screen image even under harsh sunshine, while its wide-view design offers a clear view of the monitor from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, making it particularly useful in low and high angle shooting.

Six LED Macro Lights

Digital Microscope mode with six LED Macro Lights

By positioning six LED Macro Lights around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting — the Optio WG-2 provides brighter and uniform illumination on the subject when the Digital Microscope mode is selected. Thanks to the Macro Lights, the user can clearly see a magnified view of the microscopic world often unnoticeable with the naked eye on the camera’s LCD monitor and effortlessly capture it in eye-catching images. Its instant illumination enhance function, which automatically raises the illumination level of the LED Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release, has also been upgraded to minimize camera shake and subject shake. In addition, the Macro Lights provide a Self-Portrait Assist mode to check if the subject’s face is safely captured within the picture frame using the blink of an LED lamp; and a new LED lighting mode to use the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.

5X optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage

The new Optio WG2 features a high-performance 5X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths equivalent to 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto in the 35mm format. Thanks to this versatile zoom lens, the camera captures beautiful, lively pictures in a wide range of subjects and scenes from spectacular landscapes to family/group shots in a confined space.

Just tried this camera out for the first time during 2 weeks in Mauritius. It was bought mainly for underwater shots and after comparing this to other similar cameras of the same price bracket opted for the Pentax.

The camera is well made and is very sturdy - a little on the heavy side and quite bulky - but still fits into a pocket easily. One of the main things that pleased me is that the camera is very easy to use - it comes with an instruction manual that is like war and peace - but after using the camera for a couple of hours it was evident that the manual is only needed for reference.

Switching between modes and settings is very easy once you are accustomed with the button layout - even underwater this is easy to do. The camera was used at depths of approximately 4m with no problems - it goes to 12m max

Battery life is very good and will last a full day of use

Results are very good, I am not a professional photographer and dont particularly analyse shots but the majority of the results are clear and capture good detail. Underwater shots need good light and the screen is hard to use in certain circumstances but I knew this when I bought the camera - I didnt try HD video so cannot comment on results

Overall very pleased with the purchase so far and would recommend it to anyone looking for a camera which gives the capability to use in water and is also rugged enough to be dropped or exposed to harsh conditions

Do not buy this camera! I bought it for a 6 month long trip in Southeast Asia and it broke on my first day snorkeling. Moisture damaged occurred immediately even there was no sign that it wasn't shut tight properly. As it is comes with a 12 month warranty I sent it off to the Pentax repair centre which cost me £7 in postage. I have now received a letter from them that it will cost me £240.00 to replace the camera...more than I paid originally! The damage was apparently not caused by any durability failure and is therefore not covered by the warranty. There is no way I put the camera underwater without the battery opening being closed therefore do not see how it could possibly have been my fault. VERY ANNOYED.

Fantastic camera in every respect and its claims of being adventure proof are true, as long as your adventure doesn't stray too far from a power source. Two hours approx if your shooting a lot. I bought a second battery and that obviously doubles the adventure time but don't expect to get too far with it.

I had a Pentax options w20 prior to this and loved it. When that finally died I grabbed one of these but soon realized its battery performance was no where near as good. I'm keeping it though, just a but peeved at the battery situation.

Purchased this camera after last waterproof camera gave up after several years use (Fuji). We wanted a good camera for Snorkelling Holiday and the Pentax looked like it had an impressive specification, after second use in the water (no diving just surface use) noticed condensation in the camera and on the screen then it failed. Totally disappointed, asked for a full refund from Amazon.

This camera is not waterproof despite what is said on the tin .
The service from Amazon as the prime handler of the sale of this camera has been appalling.
The service from Piscio as the seller of this camera via Amazon has also been appalling.
The camera leaked in water while on holiday so rather than return without any photographs a replacement was purchased.
The camera had to be returned to Pentax because Amazon and Piscio dint want to handle the problem despite selling the item to me. Pentax were asked for the money back ,because a replacement had been purchased, but instead sent a new camera - not what was wanted at all.
It has been a nightmare , so beware .

Right piece of equipment. Just been to Crete with it. In the pool, in the sea, on the beach, on the rocks... give it to the kids to play with... indestructable but doesn't compromise on quality like lots of other indestructable/underwater cameras. Doesn't take too long to get your head round the various preset shooting modes either. Plus it has a digital manual focus mode, incase the intelligent camera focus has some doubts. Highly reccomended.

I purchased this camera to replace an aging Olympus Tough. On first use in the sea the camera let water in within 10 minutes of surface use. Returned under warrantee, they clean and pressure tested it and said there was nothing wrong.

Great camera for tackling all sorts of elements outdoors! We used it on our holiday round the pool, in the pool and out and about and had no fears about it getting cracked or broken. Great camera to give you piece of mind and takes great photos!
