Manufacturer's Description

The PENTAX Optio H90

This digital compact camera combines a functional, no-frills design with essential user-friendly features including a high-performance wide-to-telephoto 5 x optical zoom lens, approximately 12.1 effective megapixels and a large, easy-to-view LCD monitor all within a compact, lightweight body that fits comfortably in the photographer’s hand.

The Pentax Optio H90 has a 5 x Optical Zoom

5 x Optical Zoom

Impeccable design, derived from the pursuit of functionality
The Optio H90 sports a simple, functional design, with straight lines and easy-to-push round control buttons, efficiently positioned for easy access. High-quality aluminum alloy is used in the camera’s upper front section, while the entire lens barrel is coated with matte black paint; and the grip is shaped for a firm, comfortable hold.

5 x Optical zoom lens for wide coverage from wide angle to telephoto
Despite its compact dimensions, the Optio H90 features a high-performance optical 5 x zoom lens covering focal lengths from 5.1mm to 25.5mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto). Thanks to this wide zoom range, the Optio H90 can be used for a wide variety of subjects and scenes — from spectacular landscapes, awe-inspiring architecture and group shots within confined spaces, to tightly cropped snapshots from a distance. When coupled with the Intelligent Zoom function which allows for even tighter zooming in on the subject the zoom range can be extended to approximately 31.3 times.

Large, easy to view monitor

Large, easy to view monitor

Exceptional image quality
Combining 12.1 effective megapixels with the PENTAX-developed high-performance imaging engine assuring faithful colour reproduction the Optio H90 delivers stunning, high-quality images with well-defined details. Even when images are enlarged to larger sizes, the user is assured of detailed, high-resolution prints with edge-to-edge sharpness.

Large, easy-to-view LCD monitor
Despite its compact body, the Optio H90 features a large 2.7 inch high-brightness colour LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots. Large images and menus also allow quick access to the desired settings and adjustments.

High-quality HD-proportioned movie recording
The Optio H90 captures beautiful, high-definition-TV-quality movie clips (1280 x 720 pixels). It also comes equipped with the sophisticated Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode, which automatically compensates camera shake during movie shooting with the help of exclusive software, making it possible for everyone to enjoy high-quality movie shooting with minimal effort.

Automatic face detection for effortless snapshots
The Optio H90 features the sophisticated Face Detection AF & AE function, a great tool for casual shooting. This user-friendly function instantly and accurately detects up to 32 faces in the image field, then optimises focus and exposure settings within a mere 0.03 seconds even when some of the faces are tilted or turned sideways. The Optio H90 also comes equipped with other convenient features to assist the photographer in capturing beautiful snapshots, including: the Smile Capture mode that automatically releases the shutter the moment the camera detects the subject’s smile; and the Blink Detection function that warns the photographer when the subject’s eyes close at the time of shutter release.

Firstly I must declare that I am a bit of a pentax fan, and therefore perhaps a little biased. I do also though, know a fair bit about photography being a keen photographer (using pentax and samsung DLSRs).

I bought this for my now wife to use on our honeymoon, and she loved it as soon as she saw it. It really is very compact, and very very easy to use. My wife was getting to grips with it and some of the more advanced features straight away.

    Pros:
    - Good image quality in good lighting conditions
    - Very compact and simple to use
    - Very quick to start up and be ready to shoot
    - 5 x optical zoom with pentax lens (always regarded as makers of some of the best glass)
    - Panoramic stitching works very well and gives a choice of the sequence of shots
    - Compatible with wifi sd cards

    Cons:
    - Image quality in low light not great (because of high noise levels which creep in when the camera switches to higher iso settings)
    - Images can be on the softer side
    - Battery life is average (better than AAs but heavy use over a couple days required re-charge)

    Great Camera! 22 May 2010
    Colour Name:Orange/Silver
    Pros
    - Takes great pictures (endless amounts of shooting modes)
    - Amazing filters/effects
    - fantastic recording quality (Love that i can edit in camera)
    - Lightweight (extremely so)
    - Retro look
    - easy to use
    - cheap

    Cons
    - battery life is a slight issue but i tend to use it quite a lot - luckily it doesnt take long to charge and having a lithium battery is still a plus for a camera this cheap.

I absolutely love it. Would definitely recommend it!

I picked this camera up at Heathrow before flying out to the States earlier this year. I had done absolutely no research and it was a spur of the moment purchase. I chose it because I liked the look, it also records HD proportioned movies and offers a wide angle lens option.

The camera fits nicely into your hand with all the buttons easily reachable. The LCD screen is very clear and a good size. All of the menu options are reached using the standard type of buttons found on cameras these days.

I love taking panoramic photos - and this camera didn't disappoint. You select the panoramic mode in the options and then take 3 pictures, matching up the ends of each picture using the guide that appears on screen. The wide angle option works in a similar fashion but you turn the camera to use it at portrait and then match up the ends of the 2 pictures you take.

When I got back I did a bit of research and found it has some very favorable reviews. It's a very good value budget camera with some features you don't normally get for this price range. If you search you'll find it available for approx £[].

My only slight niggle about this is you have to take the battery out to re-charge it in a seperate (provided) unit rather than being able to plug a charger directly into the camera. I'm not sure whether such a feature is actually available on budget priced camera like this but for me personally this would be the only improvement I could think of for this camera.

    Overall I thoroughly recommend it!
