Product Description

The Pentax K-30

The Pentax K-30 has been developed to help SLR beginners easily capture high-quality 16 megapixel images with the assistance of its shake-reduction technology; the PENTAX K-30 combines the size of an entry-level DSLR with features more commonly found in advanced models. These features include a weather-resistant, dustproof and cold-proof body and a glass prism finder with nearly 100% field of view. It also offers high-speed shooting of six images per second, a 1/6000 second high shutter speed, and a full-HD movie function. Together with a comfortable grip and a sporty, functional design, the K-30 guarantees a dependable, flawless performance every time.

The K-30 is available in a choice of three colours: Crystal White and Crystal Blue both with brilliant, glossy finishes; and Classic Black, for a more traditional SLR look.

High-resolution, low-noise, true-to-life image reproduction
High-resolution, low-noise, true-to-life image reproduction
The K-30 delivers super-high-resolution images

The K-30 incorporates the latest CMOS image sensor with a large image-capture area measuring 23.7mm by 15.7mm. It assures high-speed image data readout to deliver super-high-resolution, rich-gradation digital images with 16.28 effective megapixels. This image sensor is coupled with the PRIME M imaging engine for the recording of high-quality, full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 30 frames per second). The camera also minimises luminance noise at low sensitivities, while offering a wide sensitivity range between ISO 100 and ISO 12800 (or even ISO 25600 when expanded via a custom function).

Sporty, functional design perfect for outdoor shooting
Weather Sealed, perfect for outdoor use
Weather Sealed, perfect for outdoor use

Thanks to the 81 seals set in its compact and lightweight body, the K-30 is built to be weather-resistant, dustproof and cold-proof* with proven functionality in temperatures as low as -10°C making the K-30 perfect for outdoor use, whatever the weather. Its exterior has been designed to be both sporty and functional for active outdoor shooting: a large grip for a firm, secure hold of the camera; low-profile pentaprism housing for reduced height; and a rounded, soft-rubber casing for firm hold of the camera during vertical-position shooting.

Optical finder with nearly 100% field of view

The K-30 is smaller and lighter than conventional mid-level models. However, it comes equipped with a glass prism finder with nearly 100% field of view and approximately 0.92times maximum magnification (with a 50mm f/1.4 lens at infinity) to cover the entire field of view for easy focusing and framing. It delivers a clear view of the subject even in bright sunshine and eliminates parallax in the viewfinder image. The K-30 responds efficiently and reliably to demanding photographic situations, such as landscapes requiring delicate, high-precision framing, and sports scenes where the speed of the shutter release is critical. The K-30 accepts a PENTAX-original Natural-Bright-Matte III focusing screen to facilitate manual-focusing operation. The photographer can replace the standard focusing screen with one of the alternative screens available, including cross-lined and scale types, to accommodate more specialised photography.

Newly developed SAFOX IXi+ AF module for improved autofocus performance

The K-30 features the state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation by incorporating a diffraction lens to minimise chromatic aberration in accordance with the characteristics of each individual lens. It also takes into account the light source at the time of shooting. Nine of its 11 sensor points have cross-type sensors to capture all kinds of subjects in sharp focus, while its spot beam projector assists the AF system in poorly lit locations. The K-3's AF algorithm has also been upgraded in all areas. A new select-area expansion function allows the sensor module to continue to track a moving subject, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighbouring focus sensors.

High-speed burst shooting at approximately six images per second
High-speed burst shooting at approximately six images per second
High-speed burst shooting at approximately six images per second

The K-30's high-speed burst shooting function allows the photographer to record active, fast-moving subjects in a series of images — at a maximum speed of six images per second (in the JPEG recording format).

Advanced Live View shooting with helpful features

Thanks to the latest CMOS image sensor and upgraded algorithm, the K-30 offers a clear, true-to-life Live-View image (at 60 frames per second). It also features a focus-assist function to improve manual-focusing accuracy, as well as a choice of three grid display patterns including Golden Section.

Full HD Video Mode
Full HD Video Mode
Full HD Video Mode

The Pentax K-30 includes Full HD Video Recording at 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) to capture high-quality movie clips. It uses H.264 Codec Recording Format to offer a choice of frame rate (30, 25 or 24 fps in full HD and up to 60 fps in HD resolution). The K-30 also includes in camera Video Editing and Interval Movie. The latter takes a series of images at a specified interval and makes a video clip (3 seconds to 24 hr).

Effortless, user-friendly Auto Picture and Scene modes

The K-30 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene including Portrait, Landscape, Macro and other distinctive shooting modes. This function will take care of shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness. The K-30 also offers 19 Scene modes — including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette.

PENTAX-original SR mechanism with user-assisting functions
PENTAX-original SR mechanism with user-assisting functions
PENTAX-original SR mechanism with user-assisting functions

The K-30 features the PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, which effectively reduces camera shake for sharp, blur-free images even under demanding shooting conditions such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark or at night without supplementary flash illumination. This innovative mechanism works with almost all PENTAX interchangeable lenses – even those developed for film-format cameras. Thanks to the SR mechanism's flexible design that tilts the image sensor unit in all directions, the K-30 offers several useful features to assist the photographer during shooting, including: an Automatic Horizon Correction function to assure high-precision image framing and effortless adjustment of horizontal alignment; a Composition Adjustment function to allow minute adjustment of image alignment horizontally, vertically and rotationally; and an ASTROTRACER mode, to simplify astronomical photography in combination with the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit.

A selection of image-processing tools for creative, personalised expression

The K-30 features the custom image function, which allows the user to easily and quickly select the desired finishing touch for a particular image. There is a choice of 11 custom images, including Bleach Bypass, to create a dramatic visual effect used in motion pictures, and Cross Process to produce an eye-catching image with dramatic colours. It also offers a choice of 19 distinctive digital filters, including Miniature, which transforms an actual scene into what appears to be an image of miniature models. These filters add distinctive visual effects to captured images without the need for a computer. The user can further expand the creative possibilities by applying multiple filters to a single image

5.0 out of 5 stars Best kit at this price today 8 Sep 2012
Colour Name:Black|Size Name:18-55mm DAL Lens Kit
I have had the camera for over a month and have taken over 7000 photos with it, testing it extensively and this is my review based on my experiences. I am a hobby photographer, with about twenty five years' experience, coming from the old film SLRs, to a point and shoot and now I finally got the K30 as my first DSLR.

I did extensive research on this camera and the competitors before I got it, and there are many negatives and positives for each brand, which I will not go into here, but I will tell you why I chose the K30.

The main reasons were the proven sensor technology from the K-5, the cheapest weatherproof and most robust DSLR ever, and an improved AF system over the K-5.
The weatherproofing and excellent pictures are what drew me back to the K30 every time I considered the competitors.

Please note, the 18-135mm kit is resistant to dust and water, whereas the 18-55 WR kit lens is only resistant to water, and not dust. The AL lens pictured in the photo here at Amazon may be neither, and I would enquire before purchase to make sure. I purchased the kit in Germany with the 18-55 WR kit lens because I wanted to get a couple of other lenses as well and the budget did not allow the 18-135mm kit lens.

If I had to do it again, I would probably go for the 18-135mm off the bat, though the 18-55 kit, for the very cheap price does not disappoint.

Please be aware that this camera, even with the 18-55 kit, is not a travel compact camera. The 18-135mm is a tad larger than the 18-55 too. It is a good-sized and weight DSLR. If you are looking for a point and shoot or something you can stuff in your pocket this is not the camera you want.

Colour Name:Black|Size Name:Body Only
I've only had the K-30 for a few days now, still exploring the multitude of functions and features, but out of the box it's is a really great photographic tool and it performs much the same as the more expensive K-5.

The K-30 has a great set of still shooting features, and is passable for movies, but the overriding benefit is the truly excellent image quality. From ISO 100 - 800 JPEG images are pin-sharp and noise free whilst from ISO 1600 - 3200 there is plenty of detail and noise just adds a subtle graininess. The RAW files are great to work with as you can pull out extra detail out of them in Photoshop, and the camera saves RAW files in the universal Adobe DNG format. You can also convert the last JPEG image taken back to RAW with the press of a button which is something very useful and unique.

In terms of handling, the sculpted K-30 is comfortable to hold and shoot with. It is slightly heavier than the usual `Canikon' especially with my Sigma 17 - 70 mm lens, but it feels well-made and solid, certainly not 'platicky' like the Sony SLTs and of course it's weather-sealed. Having dual thumbwheels is something that is not usual on an a sub-£1,000 camera and is a real bonus. The rear LCD on back is bright and clear with 920K dots but isn't hinged like most of the competition unfortunately. The viewfinder is bright and gives 100% coverage with a good degree of magnification, Live View is nice to have and AF is pretty snappy under almost all conditions.

There are a number of in-camera options to auto-correct distortion and lateral CA, and a huge variety of digital filters such as Extract Colour or Toy Cam, plus a built in HDR mode that takes 3 photos at different exposures and combines them in camera to give an image with higher dynamic range.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great camera at an incredible price 10 Dec 2012
Colour Name:White| Size Name:Body Only|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's just a k-5 with cheaper case, without the top LCD panel. But it retains its best qualities: an incredible sensor, the weather resistant properties and a fantastic viewfinder. On the plus side, it can be powered with 4 AA batteries with a non included accesory. I bought the Maksina brand one which just does the job.

The only flaw I found so far, a minor one, is that the memory card isn't too easy to extract, due to the rubber sealing of its compartment.

Colour Name:Black| Size Name:18-55mm DAL Lens Kit|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Pentax K30 is effectively the cost-reduced version of the K5. They share the same excellent 16Mpixel sensor and automatic picture taking system, but the K30 has fewer controls and with the DA-L 18-55mm kit lens is significantly lighter than the K5 with the optically identical DA-WR 18-55mm kit lens. The Amazon blurb above is correct when the camera is used with the DA-L lens options offered.

The pictures are very, very good on both, sufficiently so that having used the K5 intensively in a wide range of conditions for a year and a half, and the K30 for almost a month I still cannot really tell the difference between the end results. At first I thought the brand new K30 was better, but after cleaning some hints of dirt off the front of the K5 lens and then shooting some A-B tests on a range of subjects it was obvious that there was no significant performance difference.

Ergonomics
. It is just a fraction small for my hands, but SWMBO found the lighter K30 nestles nicely and all the right controls just fell under her finger tips. She was delighted with how easy it was to use.
. The `Green' function is sufficient for the vast majority of point-and-shoot photography that one is likely to attempt, ideal for a novice DSLR user, and makes amazingly good pictures from a wide range of conditions.
. The default auto-finding Auto-Focus is a bit of a pain - it prefers to focus on nearest objects and not my subject, but I simply selected centre zone on the menu and that works a treat, same as with the K5.
