Product Description

HD PENTAX-DA Limited interchangeable lenses for K-mount lens-interchangeable digital cameras, featuring high-grade HD coating and round-shaped diaphragm. The HD PENTAX-DA Limited interchangeable lenses are designed for use with K-mount lens-interchangeable digital cameras. These lenses inherit the distinctive visual description and a premium appearance of the acclaimed PENTAX Limited Lens series, while adding the state-of-the-art HD coating and a round-shaped diaphragm, to deliver even higher digital imaging performance in combination with a K-mount camera body.

Developed based on the Limited Lens series - renowned for the meticulous finish in every detail from the outstanding image rendition to the high-quality, hand-machined aluminum body - these new lenses assure even better optical performance than the original Limited Lens-series models. They are treated with the HD coating, which assures much higher light transmittance than conventional multi-layer coatings to deliver sharp, clear images free of flare and ghost images, even under such demanding conditions as backlight. They also feature a completely round-shaped diaphragm to produce a natural, beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus) effect in the foreground and background.

Major Features

High-grade HD coating for exceptional image rendition

All lenses are treated with HD coating, a high-grade multi-layer lens coating that assures higher light transmittance and lower reflectance than conventional multi-layer coatings. As the result, they produce sharp, clear images free of flare and ghost images, even under such adverse lighting conditions as backlight.

Round-shaped diaphragm for beautiful out-of-focus rendition

All lenses feature a completely round-shaped diaphragm to optimize the performance of their distinctive optics. This diaphragm produces a natural, beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus) effect, while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.

Acclaimed Limited Lens-series quality for distinctive visual description and a premium appearance

While inheriting the design concept of the Limited Lens series, these lenses were designed by combining a series of mechanical and numerical evaluations with human assessment of test-shooting samples to assure the ultimate in image reproduction. Their optical design has been optimized for digital photography to deliver sharp, clear images with outstanding contrast, even at the maximum aperture. In addition, their lens barrel, hood and cap are all made of a high-grade aluminum material, hand-machined for perfect proportions and beautiful texture.

The Limited marque is the premium range of lenses for Pentax DSLRs, owned these days by Ricoh. Limited lenses are made fully from metal and glass, not the more lightweight plastic found in other models and is hand machined in production. The HD designation means the lens has the newer coating in succession to the Pentax SMC that's been around for many years. This prime 70mm is the film camera equivalent of a 105 portrait lens and it's very much for people photography that I, and most people it seems, bought it.

Compared to the DA series primes that I already own the first thing I noticed is the weight of the 70mm It looks tiny, especially without the hood, but feels so much more solidly built. It oozes quality even before mounting on the camera.

I've given the lens 5 stars as yes, I love it's performance and that's the bottom line. But I do feel that for a £400+ lens there are improvements that could be made, so let's deal with those first.

The top Pentax DSLRs (K-50, K-3) are weather sealed, as are many of the DA lenses, including my 50-200 zoom. This Limited lens is not though. I do feel that for such an expense and for the cameras this lens is likely to be used on it should be as a matter of course. My second gripe is that when mounted on the top of the range K-3 it doesn't seem to match. The colour and finish is different and the lens is so small it makes holding the camera in the correct manner difficult. The K-3, especially with grip added, is chunky, the 70mm lens looks like it was designed for something smaller and neater and with the hood extended looks like it was made for something else entirely. In fact the lens matches better with a cheap 'flower' hood attached rather that the pointy looking one supplied.

First, while I have never tried the non-HD version of this lens (the older version), I believe this lens is only an incremental improvement over the older version.

I bought this lens about a year ago and then returned it. I wanted a lens for taking good portraits and I was very impressed with portraits from my nifty thrifty fifty (Pentax DA 50mm, f1.8). The Pentax DA 70mm had an even better reputation for portraits and its focal length seemed ideal. However, when I got it, I noticed I had to back off more I wanted to from those I wanted to take head shots of in my apartment. Since, the nifty fifty did such a good job of taking head shots in my modest abode and since the Pentax DA 70mm is reasonably expensive, I returned it.

Forward one year. I realized I needed lens with greater than 50mm focal length when taking people pictures outside of my condo. This lens is great for taking photos of people in grocery stores, in parks, on the street and giving talks. The fine reputation this lens has for sharpness and brokeh is well deserved. Being a Pentax limited prime, it is small, light weight and well built.

If you have need for a lens like this, you will be plenty happy with this lens. Its main competitor is the Pentax FA 77mm (which I have not ever used). This lens has a legendary reputation - it is most likely a tiny bit better optically than the Pentax DA 70mm (both lenses get excellent reviews). However, the FA costs a lot more, and is a little bigger and heavier. I don't think anyone would be unhappy with either lens. I am quite happy with my Pentax 70mm. This time it is a keeper.
