Product Description

Product Description

The PENTAX Q7 digital lens-interchangeable camera has been developed as the top-of-the-line model of the PENTAX Q series, this new model is equipped with an image sensor much larger than those of its sister Q-series models for upgraded image quality, while retaining the super-compact, ultra-lightweight body that comfortably fits in the photographer's palm.

Launched as the flagship model of the popular PENTAX Q series, the PENTAX Q7 offers casual, carefree digital-SLR-quality photography to everyone. Thanks to a new 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor - the largest in the Q series - the Q7 delivers image quality that has been much improved from its sister models. It also offers a host of the advanced features expected in a top-of-the-series model, including high-sensitivity shooting at a top sensitivity of ISO 12800 (compared to ISO 6400 for the Q10); improved shake-reduction performance; reduced operation time lag at start-up and between exposures; and effortless, user-friendly operation. In addition, it features an array of creative tools such as Bokeh Control and Smart Effect, which assist the photographer in easily creating more personalized images

Major Features

Extra-large 1/1.7-inch image sensor - the largest in the Q series

Outstanding operability

Dependable SR mechanism

Featuring a latest gyro sensor, the Q7's upgraded SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism compensates camera shake by as much as three shutter steps. As a result, the Q7 produces sharp, blur-free images even under conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, or capturing landscapes in the twilight.

High-quality, Full HD movie recording, even during high-sensitivity shooting

The Q7 features a high-resolution 3.0-inch, 3:2-proportion LCD monitor with approximately 460,000 dots. The monitor has been treated with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to offer sharp, bright images even under bright sunshine by effectively minimizing glare and reflection on the screen. Since its wide-view design makes it possible to view the image from 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, the user has a clear view of the image even when facing the monitor diagonally

The Q7's DR II (Dust Removal II) mechanism effectively prevents annoying dust spots from spoiling captured images, even after the user changes lenses out in the open. Like the PENTAX K-5 II and 645D digital SLR cameras, it employs a highly effective supersonic vibration mechanism, which vibrates the image sensor at high speed to shake the dust off its surface.

It may look like a toy, or a child's camera, but don't let its diminutive size fool you. This is a very capable picture taking machine, with full manual control (if you want it) and RAW capture. In fact, I find it almost as featured as my DSLRs. The image quality is surprisingly good, by way of a 1/1.7" sensor. This is larger than the previous models in the range, and the picture quality is noticeably improved over the Q and Q10 - not that there is much wrong with these cameras. The big plus point of the Q system is its size: one can carry the body and several lenses and not notice they are there because of their small size and light weight. Other compact system cameras are now approaching the small size of the Q7, but when you add lenses to the mix, the Pentax is by far and away the most portable of the interchangeable lens camera systems available today.

A quick word about the lenses. Currently available are the 01 8.5mm f1.9 Standard Prime (approx 39mm 35mm equivalent); 02 5-15mm f2.8-4.5 Zoom (24-70mm Equiv); 06 15-45 mm f2.8 zoom (70-200 Equiv) and the 08 wide-angle zoom 3.8-5.9mm f3.7-4 ultra wide-angle zoom (17.5 - 27mm equiv). There are also a number designated as toy lenses for fun photography, including a fish-eye. I can only speak for the first three lenses, which I own, and I am perfectly happy with the image quality I get from them. Pentax also manufacture an adaptor with built-in shutter to attach its range of K-mount lenses on the Q7.

I recently upgraded to the Q7 from a Q10. (The progression of the names is non-intuitive, but the earliest camera was the Pentax Q, followed by the Q10, the Q7 and most recently the Q-S1).

I'm absolutely in love with the Q-series cameras. The camera is tiny (the body is about the same size as a deck of cards), but takes interchangeable lenses. With some of the lenses (such as the 01 prime or 03 fisheye) it will fit in a jacket pocket, yet it has more options than my serious Canon DSLRs. You can shoot in full auto or scene modes, or switch over to have full manual control. Despite the small size, as a large man I have no difficulty at all operating the controls. The controls are very intuitive.

There are many creative options and filters - so you can produce a huge variety of results straight out of the camera - including instagram-style filters, bold monochrome - which gives very characterful results - and HDR ('high dynamic range', which helps avoid areas of the image losing detail from being too dark or light to see).

Above all, the camera somehow has bags of character - and while I still take my DSLR's for photos I'm aiming to make money from, the Q7 is a bundle of fun to use, and my first choice for travel or family shots.

While I've been pleased with the Q10 for the last couple of years, the Q7 is a very worthy upgrade. It has upgraded logic circuits, software, and an upgraded and enlarged sensor.

Very pleased with this camera. Whilst I realize that there are other (generally more expensive and larger) csc's which have larger sensors with a greater number of pixels and, therefore, can resolve more detail; for convenience, the Q7 is hard to beat. It is extremely small and light and yet can produce files good enough to print at A3.
For the ultimate quality I would always use a DSLR, but for general picture taking, without the bulk and weight of a DSLR kit, this little camera is perfect.
The incredibly cheap ever ready case and additional lenses are also worth considering.

It truly is amazing. Was really astounded by the quality of the pictures. This fits the need of anyone who wants a powerful camera that takes good shots without having to buy a great big DSLR!! Would highly recommend

It is not a big issue for most of the users in the UK, but be warned that the menu language does not include Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
Before I brought this, I had checked the Ricoh official UK website. it clear indicates that the above languages are included in the product sold in UK [...]
The package itself has multi-language descriptions including Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese, giving us the impression that those language are included in the display menu. Unfortunately it is NOT.
raised the issue to Amazon but no response.
