Product Description

The PENTAX Q10 digital interchangeable-lens camera is the latest model in the PENTAX Q series; this camera offers digital-SLR-quality photography to everyone. Thanks to a newly adopted CMOS image sensor and an upgraded algorithm, the camera delivers a much-improved basic performance, such as higher-quality images and faster AF operation.

Exceptional image quality delivered by digital interchangeable-lens camera system

Thanks to the incorporation of a newly designed back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with outstanding high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics, the PENTAX Q10 delivers high-resolution, rich-gradation images with approximately 12.4 effective megapixels and a top sensitivity of ISO 6400. The combination of a high-performance imaging engine, developed using PENTAX’s long-standing expertise in digital SLR camera development, and exclusively designed, high-performance Q-mount lenses, ensures that the PENTAX Q10 delivers clear, high-contrast images rich in gradation and texture, even at the edges. With minimised high-sensitivity noise, the photographer can use the entire sensitivity range from ISO 100 to the highest ISO 6400 without the worry of annoying digital noise.

Upgraded AF performance

Thanks to the new image sensor and an upgraded AF algorithm, the PENTAX Q10’s autofocus operation is much faster than before, even when using a telephoto lens or shooting in dimly lit locations. An AF Assist Light is provided on the camera body to optimise focusing accuracy in the dark, while the Face Recognition AF function automatically detects up to 12 faces and pinpoints the focus on the main subject.

Quick-Dial to simplify the application of creative visual effects

By assigning the creative Smart Effect function to the easy-to-access Quick-Dial positioned on the camera’s front panel, the photographer can effortlessly add the desired finishing touch to an image, while previewing the effect on the LCD monitor. Since the Quick-Dial has four positions, the photographer can assign four of their favorites from the nine Smart Effect modes in advance. In order to customize the PENTAX Q10 to accommodate specific shooting styles and user preferences, the user can also assign other options such as a custom image setting, a digital filter or an aspect ratio setting to this dial

A selection of image-processing tools to create personalised images

The Custom Image function adds a distinctive finishing touch to an image. The user has a choice of nine Custom Image modes, including Bleach Bypass, which produces a dramatic, movie-like finish. The digital filter function lets the photographer apply a variety of visual effects without needing a computer. With a total 19 digital filters, 11 filters such as Toy Camera, Invert Colour and Posterization can be applied even during the shooting of still images and movie clips, while the remaining 8 are applicable only during playback. The user can even apply different filters one after another to a single image to create more inventive visual effects.

High-quality, Full HD movie recording of extended movie clips

The PENTAX Q10 comes equipped with a Full HD movie-recording function employing the H.264 recording format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The user can also take advantage of the advanced image-processing tools like the Smart Effect modes** and other built-in movie editing tools during movie shooting. With a push of the OK button on the back panel, the PENTAX Q10 even offers autofocus operation during movie shooting. The PENTAX Q10 also provides a micro-HDMI terminal (type D), which allows the user to simultaneously output both Full HD movie clips and sound to external devices via a single terminal.

Effortless Bokeh control

The PENTAX Q10’s unique bokeh control function allows the user to purposely make the subject stand out by automatically assessing the relative distance between the in-focus subject and obtrusive objects in the field of view. Since this function simplifies the advanced, SLR-calibre technique of intentional defocusing, even a first-time digital photographer can effortlessly capture high-quality images with a beautifully defocused foreground and/or background.

SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images

The PENTAX Q10 incorporates the PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, which automatically shifts the CMOS image sensor to offset camera shake detected by the camera’s motion sensor. As a result, the PENTAX Q10 produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions that are prone to camera shake, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, or capturing landscapes in the twilight.

Simple, user-friendly Auto Picture and Scene modes

The PENTAX Q10 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode from such options as Portrait, Landscape and Macro for a given subject or scene, then optimises all affecting parameters, such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness. It also provides 21 Scene modes including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette, allowing even an inexperienced digital photographer to choose the best exposure mode for a complicated scene with the simple choice of an icon on the LCD monitor.

Dependable, flexible exposure system

The PENTAX Q10’s comprehensive exposure system assures all the advantages and flexibility of a digital lens-interchangeable camera system. To accommodate user preferences and varying photographic applications, it offers a choice of four different exposure modes: the all-purpose Programmed AE (P) mode, which automatically selects an optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed; the Shutter-Priority AE (Tv) and Aperture-Priority AE (Av) modes, which allow the photographer to faithfully reproduce specific creative intentions on resulting images; and the Metered Manual (M) mode.

High-speed continuous shooting at approximately five images per second

The PENTAX Q10’s high-speed continuous shooting mode allows the photographer to record up to five images (in JPEG recording format) in a single sequence, at a maximum speed of approximately five images per second. This mode comes in handy when trying to preserve the action of fast-moving subjects in a series of images.

Other features
  • High-resolution, wide-view 3.0-inch colour LCD monitor with approx. 460,000 dots
  • Long battery life through incorporation of power-efficient components such as a new image sensor

I own a Canon D-SLR, and while it's a fantastic tool sometimes there's a need to take something along that's less bulky but still capable. The Q10 fits that niche nicely.

The camera body is tiny, barely any larger than a pack of cards. With the 5-15mm standard zoom supplied in this kit that grows quite a bit but will still fit in my jacket pocket - and I can imagine would be great for an evening out in most handbags. It's also extremely light. (Better still in terms of portability would be Pentax's standard 8.5mm prime lens, but unfortunately at the current date I can't find anyone supplying that in the UK).

For serious photographers, this has all the control you could hope for and then some - Av, Tv and M modes are easily accessible from a mode dial at the top. There are also P, Scene, HD video, Auto and "BC" modes. The BC or Blur Control mode simulates shooting at a wide aperture on a camera with a larger sensor by blurring out more out-of-focus areas of the screen; the tiny sensor and focal length of the lens make this physically difficult but instead the effect is simulated by the camera's software.

The supplied zoom lens has a reasonable maximum aperture of 1:2.8 at 5mm. Unfortunately this decreases to 1:4.5 when zoomed in to 15mm. The tiny compact-camera sensor has a crop factor of 5.5 so the little zoom sees the same field of view as a 28-85mm lens on a full-frame or film SLR. The sharpness and autofocus speed are probably a little better than average D-SLR kit lens but disappointing compared to the lenses you'd tend to upgrade to from those. In my shots so far I've not noticed colour fringing or significant distortion in the images.

First off I love Pentax cameras and have done for many years. I am an enthusiastic amateur who has two Pentax DSLR's a (K-r and a K-30) - so the prospect of the same menu style and decent performance in my pocket appealled. (There is the possibility of adding DSLR lenses to this camera too with an adapter but I haven't tried this yet ... but this will defeat the main benefit of this camera ... which is being pocket sized).
I have had point and shoot compacts from Canon and Fuji for snaps where the DSLR was too bulky to lug but was always disappointed with the results and loss of proper camera feel. Now the price of the Q10 has dropped from Amazon this became a must have bit of kit for me to replace my pocket snapper Fuji. First impressions are excellent with loads of shooting controls, good quality feel despite the really small size. Picture quality already outshines all the compact cameras I have used previously. There are some low star reviews criticising picture vibrance and quality for the Q10. This puzzles me because even on full auto point and shoot mode the image quality is very good and can easily be adjusted in camera if you like your shots to be more vibrant.(or can be adjusted post shooting if this is more your thing).
The camera is tiny so can easily go in a jacket pocket + fits my compact camera replacement criteria perfectly. Despite big hands it is very easy to use. Ok the zoom range of the supplied lens isn't massive but this helps with creativity - either frame your shots differently or get closer to your subject. (If you want massive optical telephoto zoom then a DSLR is preferrable for quality purposes anyway).
Overall very impressed and would recommend to anyone wanting to step up from phone or compact camera to something more capable without being too big for your pocket or handbag.

Pentax Q10 Compact System Camera with 5 to 15mm Lens Kit - Black

I use a camera as part of my work, I'm a full time seller of Hi-Fi equipment via the internet using auctions sites as my main outlet, quality picture can sell a product.
I used a fair few cameras which have had varied results but all have been satisfactory, they have mainly been Sony and Fuji my last was the Fujifilm FinePix S1800 Digital Camera (12MP,18x Wide Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCDwhich has been good to average.
The Pentax Q10 is more than twice the price of the Fujifilm, is it twice the camera?

First impressions are good, small than I thought which is a good thing, Fuji has been a bulky thing to carry around, which stopped me taking it most of the time.
Pentax comes nicely packed, Camera and lens are easy to fit as nice and easy to remove, the battery is a rechargeable one, not a AA type, thought this may be a problem as you can always stop and buy AA batteries when yours runs out of charge but have found the batteries available for £9.99 on amazon, what you pay for good AA chargeable's I'll buy an extra one and keep it constantly charged.

Camera doesn't come with an SD card so this is something you need to add If you don't have one, I've a few of them so was okay to get started it uses SD/ SDHC/ SDXC

Getting started is straight forward, you need to charge the battery first, pop in a SD card and off it goes.
User manual is rather thick but easy to use and worth the effort reading it.

Thought the best way to see how good or bad the Pentax was, was to use it in parallel with the fujifilm.
