Pentax UCF WP

Manufacturers Description

The UCF range takes a different approach. The dual-axis, inverted porro prism design is compact and light-weight. Combine this with aspherical lens elements for edge-to-edge sharpness, BaK4 prisms, and fully multi-coated lenses, and you get a star performer, ideal as a travel companion, for outdoor events, or for general purpose usage. Good holding comfort for long observation: the ergonomic design of the UCF X II series means that you’ll feel no fatigue even after long use. This is an advantage that is in great demand with wildlife observers. With their 25mm objective lenses this series offers first-class imaging capabilities. Their particularly short minimum focusing distances of under two metres and their multi-coated lens elements guarantee you clear and high-contrast imaging. Their rubberised body housings offer ideal protection from rain, dust, and strong vibrations.

Aspherical lens elements providing edge-to-edge sharpness

Edge-to-edge sharpness is a vital element to comfortable viewing. To achieve this, we utilise aspherical lens elements in our eyepieces. This is a specially-shaped lens design that reduces aberration to a minimum.

Inner Focusing

The Inner Focus function is critical to low-maintenance and long life guarantee. Exposure to airborne particles and moisture is avoided, thereby ensuring that no outside influences can penetrate the binocular housing and disrupt functionality.

High Quality BaK4 prism to enhance transmission and resolution

A prism is a complex optical element necessary to correct the image the right way up and reduce overall length of the binocular. In a prism, light travels through complicated angles and so the quality of the prism glass used is of significant importance. PENTAX uses exclusively high-index BaK4 prisms, made of very pure Barium glass.

Inverted porro prism design

This can be recognised with the eyepiece positioned off-line from the objective lens. The advantages of this design are that it is less expensive and has good optical quality.

These are lightweight and small. The optics have good edge to edge clarity, no discernable distortion or fringing, good colour rendering and reasonable light gathering power. 10x magnification is right for me but others might prefer the slightly better light gathering and wider field of view of 8x.

They feel nice in the hands (mine are small) and can be used one handed. Focussing is smooth and precise. I like the pop in and out right eye focussing knob which is tucked out of harm's way when not in use. The depth of field is small, so viewing obects at varying distances requires refocussing. They focus down to about 1.5 metres. The case is soft, lightweight plastic, tough but doesn't give much protection.

If you have a specialist requirement for binoculars you'll look elsewhere, but otherwise these are excellent for the general user.

Pentax UCF X-II Excellent value and performance 12 April 2007
By C. D. Pitman - Published on Amazon.com
I purchased these a couple of years ago for mountain rescue work. I wanted something lightweight, sufficient power, and that would work well with glasses. They succeeded superbly on all accounts. I now am glasses-free (thanks to Lasics!) and the binocs work equally well without glasses. Nice adjustments that are easy to locate and use. They are an excellent trade-off between weight and size on one hand, and performance on the other hand. Also, they seem to be rugged, although I have yet to launch them off a cliff face.

Considering the cost of some binoculars, these are affordable and offer great performance.

Pentax UCF-X II 10x25 is a pretty good binocular 3 Jun 2008
By Becky Tree - Published on Amazon.com
I was looking for a binocular under 1 pound that nonetheless had the optical quality of a larger binocular. Consumer Reports recommended this one, and the price was right--in the range of $70-$80. They are indeed lightweight, compact, easy to focus, let in adequate light, and the view is very sharp and clear. My only complaint is that the strap attaches forward of the center of gravity so that the binocular has a tendency to flip upside-down against my bosom. The field of view isn't very big-natch, they're "compact" - so they are good for bird watching, looking at distant details, etc., but I wouldn't recommend them for watching sports. This model is affordable and useful for my modest needs.

Very good binoculars 15 Feb 2011

This is my first high quality binoculars and I've very impressed with Pentax in the quality of the product. I have other Pentax products and they all seem to be of very high quality and good performance.

The binoculars come in a very nice case that is slightly padded. It also comes with a very nice method of attaching and detaching the neck strap. Instead of having to loop through a small hole like most binoculars, these come with little snap in clips that clip right into the body instantly. You can also detach them quickly as well. Although not necessary, it is a very nice touch and it is the little things in this binocular that I find stand out.

Another nice touch is that the diopter setting for the right eye is in the center of the binocular that stays hidden until you need to adjust. You just push on the "button" and it pops out to let you adjust to your eye. Then you simply push it back in , which has a nice quality snap, and it will stay protected against accidental changes.

The binoculars also allow two eye relief settings. The eye cups pop out to two different heights or can stay flush if needed. Finally, to change the width of the eye distance both pieces bend TOGETHER evenly and smoothly which is nice. Everything feels very solid and seems to have been thought out well in design.

Now onto the quality of view. Excellent. Very impressed. Everything is very clear, sharp and also bright which is good considering this is a 10x25 binocular. Generally 25mm binoculars are dim and worse at higher magnifications. I was debating getting the 8x25 instead to get a brighter image but the optics are very well designed that it picks up light well. For example, compared to my cheap $35 Bushnell Falcon 10x50's, these outperform then in every way except the 50mm has a larger field of view of course. However the image is sharper and brighter in the Pentax. I pointed both at the moon one night to see how much detail I could pick up. The 10x50's did well and kept in focus. The Pentax however showed more detail and texture of the moon and was brighter.

Overall these are very good and well made binoculars and because of the higher quality optics I believe you can get away with the higher magnifications and still get a clear bright image.
