Learn an empowering, foundational concept for guitar 4 Sept. 2014
By R. Johnson - Published on
This book is a powerful tool for developing your own soloing style and ability. I was able to quickly learn all five pentatonic arpeggios, move them to different keys, and then string the different arpeggios together --- moving from one position to another to keep the solo going. Once you have the five pentatonics memorized (5 for major and 5 for minor), the power is in your hands to keep the creativity going. When improv soloing, I used to run out of ideas rather quickly. Now I find that I can keep soloing indefinitely by using pentatonic strategies and I have a better "feel" for the guitar in general.

This book will not tell you what solos to perform, note for note. They give you a couple ideas to help you get the concept, for example, of how to string together different arpeggios and move between the five positions up and down the fretboard. But once you get the idea, you can take over without going back to the book for advice.

So if you're wanting to find lengthy tab solos and lots of licks, this book may not be what you're looking for. If you already have your pentatonic arpeggios memorized and use them comfortably, this book isn't for you either. But if you're new to pentatonics and looking for a deeper understanding of musical concepts, guitar strategies, and empowering knowledge to keep your own creativity going, you can't go wrong with this book, IMO. I'm looking at the "Modal Soloing Strategies" book from the same series next. This book has inspired me to keep learning more and more.

Very few ideas presented in this book. It does show scale diagrams and simply takes you up and down the scales - not many strategies here and the examples are the exact same as those in this other books.
