4.0 out of 5 stars Lundgren, Nazis and the Olympics! 19 July 2012
Format:Blu-ray
Whilst this film appears to have gotten quite a bit of slack on here, I actually really enjoyed it!

A fun and very entertaining sports / action film that's truly underrated!

Dolph Lundgren - star of a whole bunch of epic actioners from THE EXPENDABLES to RED SCORPION - is on fine performance as this Pentathlon player. Is there nothing this man can't do?! What we have here is a slightly different Lundgren vehicle - it's less about shooting up baddies and more about competing...with Nazis, naturally. Instead what we get is Dolph film in which his character is not only a powerful and strong bad-ass, but sensitive and very funny at time. PENTATHLON is a mighty fine sports film which is perfect for the Olympics fever that's spreading around with the build up to the 2012 event.

Acting along side Dolphy is the brilliant Mr David Soul (from SALEM'S LOT, STARSKY AND HUTCH and the hilariously offensive JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA). His performance is equally great, in which he plays a cold, evil Nazi hell bent on winning at any cost. And I mean ANY cost!

PENTATHLON is a fantastic film for any and every action and sports fan. The perfect piece of entertainment for the Olympics build-up too. Presented on Blu-ray in glorious high-def, this release is the best you'll ever see it!

Having a bit of an inside view on Pentathlon (the sport! Not the movie), and a couple of friends who competed at Seoul, they swear blind it was nothing like this, and certainly don't remember Dolph swaggering (or staggering) around.

It's one for a wet Saturday evening, with nothing better to do, some beer, a pizza, a few mates and the sound turned down to create your own dialogue. I certainly wouldn't waste actual money on it though.

Only for die-hard Dolph fans or Pentathletes who want to include it in a collection for the sake of 'completeness' if not actual quality or watchability (more than once).

If you're an ice-hockey player, this film does for Pentathlon what 'Sudden Death' with the Muscles from Brussels did for that sport.

Mostly awful, but occasionally unintentionally hysterical. A true triumph of the 80's mindless cheesy action genre.

Has there EVER been a Hollywood film that criticises or even challenges the assumption that the United States is the greatest most noble most selflessly benevolent country to have ever existed on Planet Earth? I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that EVERY single Hollywood film i have ever seen propagates - to a greater or lesser extent, either implicitly or explicitly - such myths. And, surprise surprise, "Pentathlon" is no exception.

Yes, once again, the bogeyman is Caaaaamunism, this time in the shape of the former German Democratic Republic, as Yankee meathead Dolph Lundgren stars as an East German pentathlete who ends up escaping from the evil clutches of the nasty old GDR, by defecting to the good old Land of the Free and Home of the Brave (don't laugh!) during the '88 Seoul Olympics.

I mean, it says a lot about the US film industry, that even in 1994 (when this appalling film was made) they just couldn't resist the temptation to drag the memory of Communism through the dirt some more. The truth of course is that, while the former Communist regimes of the Eastern Bloc were far from perfect, they did provide a substantial social safety net for their people in terms of relatively good working conditions, pensions, free health care, free education (including at university level!), affordable housing, etc, etc. The destruction of this social safety net since the collapse of Communism has resulted in widespread misery across Eastern Europe, particularly in the former Soviet Union itself, where at least 3 million are estimated to have died as a direct result of the wiping out of the old Soviet welfare state.

2.0 out of 5 stars Well.... 7 Sep 2002
Format:VHS Tape
this film opened very well... East germany, a bunch of sporting kids running out of basic houses, primitive but yet so cool red typical roof and plain yellow paint... out of it walks a bunch of sporting kids and start running up a hill like terain as a pratice race a great fanfare is played buy the orchestra
one boy falls bit his father tries to cheer him saying something nice and wise "you lost nut to fall and rise again a tousand times is currage" So they teach him to be the best after some years and he wins a gold medal some dude from the secret police tries to froce him to take steroids... they are being cruel and going of of their mind when dolph escapes to us.a they still follows him for revange "to many dramtic police scence that look the same... even if in the end dolph makes an exellent gunshot while the "police thats out of his mind is aiming at him. like a fast western duel after some fist punches. after winning a medal for the usa this time....

well the opening was fantastic the girl he fell in love with was pretty sweet(even if it made him loose some concentration on what he had to do) and the ending was alright action

but seing the same police scene over and over again is silly and not realistic... but the opening was fantastic i could picture meself living in one of those basic houses in the residential area with plane yellow(typical stone biulding) with a simple typical red roof... OH if life could be simple and easy some times
