Folk-jazz fusion at its best!, 19 Sep 2003
This review is from: Pentangle - Captured Live [DVD] (DVD)
Where has this gem been hiding all these years???? Pentangle were, back at the turn from the 60s to the 70s, one of the greatest bands around. Their own mix of rock, folk, blues and jazz was unique and fantastic. Bert Jansch (widely acknowledged as a bit of a complete hero in the folk world) and John Renbourn (also widely acknowledged as a bit of a hero in the folk world!)on guitar, Danny Thompson on double bass (the best and highly rated double bass player on the planet since, well...ever!) the beautiful silky tones of Jacqui Mc Shee on vocals and the tight, snappy jazzy drumming of Terry Cox make up this band and this dvd shows them off as what they were in their hetday; the best! The tracks are mostly taken off their album Solomon's Seal (Willy O'Winsbury stands out, but all tracks are great)and they are clearly enjoying themselves, even though they are in a television studio. Perhaps the large quanities of red wine that are clearly demolished between songs (check out the speed the glasses empty) is adding to their enjoyment. Who knows? This is a forgotten classic and well done to Classic Rock Productions for releasing this. A must for all lovers of rock, folk, blues, jazz...need I say more?

Overpriced and underachieving, 23 Jun 2004
This review is from: Pentangle - Captured Live [DVD] (DVD)
This is a CD full of disappointment. Firstly, all you get is 41 minutes. OK, maybe I did not read the information about the CD closely enought - but c'mon! 41 minutes? Unless you are a die-hard Pentangle fan (which I thought I was close to) your enjoyment of a reasonably clean performance will be continually marred by thinking how much you only paid for the privilege of 41 minutes-worth. It is a shame that, for example, this could not have been combined with the BBC In Concert recording, which was recently aired on BBC4 (so it does still exist), or perhaps any modern footage that may exist. The audio quality is fair although I have to say that neither Mssrs Renbourn or Jansch particularly shine in their performances. Perhaps it was just an off-day? On top of that none of the famous "Basket of Light" tracks are aired here. Yes, if you must have this to complete your collection, then of course it is going to be worth it. But, if like me, you were only intrigued enough to buy it then you will probably end up offering it in the Amazon marketplace fairly soon to recoup some of the cost.

One reviewer said that this was 41 mins. long. It is if you count the trailers for other stuff, (which I don't) as part of what you are paying for, otherwise try 28 mins. Then there is the questionable "artistic" camera work/editing, which is very much of its time but adds little if anything to the experience. There seems to have been a shortage of cameras as for some of the time there is simple panning from Jacqui to Bert past drum kit and amps which was never going to impress. All that said ,the playing is great, which is just as well considering, the set list is all top stuff and I played it three times on the trot when it arrived. It changes hands for a lot of cash, but that is the way it is. They were a unique group that shone brightly for a fairly short time. Worth the money? Yes and No. It depends on how deep your pockets are I suppose, and whether you want to treat yourself. By no means bad, just could have been heaps better.
