Its an exciting day for Class 3B when Mrs Sword announces an excursion to the local zoo. To help solve the riddles set by the zoo keeper, Ralph brings along his favourite pencil, Penny, who is thrilled to be out of the classroom. However, when they arrive Ralph finds out that the zoo is threatened with closure, to be replaced with a Texta factory. Penny suspects that her arch-nemesis Black Texta is involved and with the help of her new friends, Spike the hedgehog, Milligan the stoat, Herby the tiger and Zelda the zebra, Penny must stop Black Textas campaign of destruction, while Ralph carries out his own quest to save the zoo.
