Product Description

Product Description

Young Amishman Jedidiah Troyer is now a traveler. He's signed up for an emigration program that is colonizing the planet of New Pennsylvania. He just wants to start a farm and homestead on affordable land in a new Amish community. Space pioneering isn't as easy as it sounds when you're "plain." Jedidiah and his new friend Dawn arrive on New Pennsylvania in the middle of a rebel uprising, and TRACE, the resistance group that is rising up against TRANSPORT, has taken on the mission of getting Jed from the City to the Amish Zone. Being a stranger in the old world doesn't even compare to being a stranger in a new world... a world that is at war and where nothing is what it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic sci-fi tale with an Amish twist. 29 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Finally collected into an omnibus edition, Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania series was one of the breakout successes in recent months. The self-published work, originally split into five parts is now available as a whole novel, with a beautifully redesigned cover by Jason Gurley and amazing artwork by Ben Adams (both of whom recently worked on Hugh Howey's Sand)

It's an instantly entertaining sci-fi romp with an Amish twist as a young Jed Troyer decides to leave his Amish home to seek a better life in New Pennsylvania, a recently colonised planet, the farming and subsistence skills of his people providing an invaluable asset to the colonisation.

Soon after arriving however, Jed realises that things are not what they seem and he finds himself entangled in a long-running power struggle, becoming an unwilling fugitive, and discovering more than he expected about his past, present and future.

It's a well-crafted and engaging tale full of intrigue and mystery heightened by the protagonist's innocence and naiveté dealing with not only the outside world but another world altogether. What should be a straightforward trip suddenly turns in to an action-packed sci-fi thriller on a much grander scale than expected it soon becomes cleat that whatever the outcome, life will never be the same again for Jed.

Setting and characters are well-balanced and quickly established and thankfully uncompromising to both its subject and the genre. The plot is thick with a heady mix of tension, humour and excitement but never meanders and it's impressive just how much of this great story the author manages to pack in to a relatively short work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indie publishing done right ... 5 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Michael Bunker's omnibus edition is a thing of beauty, be it e-book or print.

The excellent story is a blending genres I've not come across in sci fi before and, oddly, it works. Think The Witness crossed with The Da Vinci Code but without the guided museum tour. Very few authors who invent their own genres can pull it off but Amish Sci Fi world surprisingly well without the usual stereotypes.

On the indie author front, Bunker also proves that self-published books can be even better than the ones produced by the Big 5 publishers ... the cover is gorgeous, the layout superbly accented by gorgeous exclusive illustrations ... this is a book you want to read then pass on, if only to show other people how it should be done. I'm already looking forward to visiting Oklahoma in the promised sequel.
