Popular guide covering the canals and waterways in the north west of England around Merseyside and Manchester. Colour Ordnance Survey® maps clearly show locks, towpaths and boating facilities. There are also comprehensive navigational notes as well as descriptions of the towns and villages, pubs and restaurants alongside the waterways.

In print for over 30 years, the Collins/Nicholson guides to the waterways have always been a vital part of journeys along Britain’s canals and rivers. They are designed for anyone and everyone with an interest in Britain’s inland waterways – from experienced boaters to those planning their first boat trip, as well as walkers, cyclists and visitors.

The Ordnance Survey ® Maps have added information showing:
• Locks, bridges, tunnels, aqueducts, winding holes and towpaths.
• Waterpoints, sanitary stations, pump out facilities and refuse disposal.
• Boatyards, pubs, restaurants and local shops.
• Mile markers and milestones (distance in miles and number of locks to strategic points along the waterways).

Text includes:
• The history and background to each canal.
• Local services and places of interest, pubs and restaurants and NEW for this edition: postcodes added for each place.
• Opportunities for walking and cycling.
• NEW for this edition: notes on wildlife to be found along the waterways.

Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delighted with this excellent guide 29 July 2012
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased Nicholson Waterways Guide to Northwest and The Pennines
And I am pleased with it
This guide is spiral bound which is perfect for browsing
I do not own a narrow boat and like to walk along the canals in the North West
and especially the Peak Forrest Canal
I can honestly recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars It is what I was looking for. 14 May 2013
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this book as we are going on the Leeds/Liverpool Canal in June. Admittedly, I wanted a large scale fold out map of the Leeds/Liverpool Canal, but Geomaps have ceased trading. This will do the trick though, but just wish the maps were of a bigger scale and of Leeds/Liverpool Canal ONLY and not the North-West.

3.0 out of 5 stars An average guide book 14 April 2013
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was bought to replace an elderly tatty guide book, but was not as good as we expected. The maps are smaller scale than previous editions and give less detail. Also, although this is a new "revised" publication some of the information is several years out of date. Disappointing,

I plan to cycle along the canal from Liverpool to Leeds this book has a lot of imformation on the route. Lots on the towns & villages the canals pass through.Pubs & restaurants on or near to the canals.Which side of the canal the tow path runs.I also found a nice walk along the Peak Forest canal wich I intend to do in the summer

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical! 24 Feb 2013

When I bought a set of 'New Edition' Nicholsons Guides immediately they were available, I mistakenly hoped for improvements on the earlier edition, with real updates. I should have known better - information still out of date, sometimes by more than a year. Still, that's Nicholsons!

Bought these to work out the route to canoe from east coast to west coast later this year so not actually used them yet. Show enough details for what we need. Good price and good delivery.
