Product Description

Product Description

The original Boogie, reluctant hero of the South West Peninsular Path, was the Mongrel from hell. Mark Wallington's New Boogie, like New Labour, appears a much trendier and more wholesome incarnation -until, that is, Mark gets him on the Pennine Way. This is the big one in every sense. Clearly Boogie will do fine -but will Mark be up to the task?

The third book in the 'Boogie' trilogy is again a truly wonderful read. I admire Mark Wallington because of the way the reader is able to walk a long distance footpath without the need to get out of his armchair. Indeed, all the misfortunes he incurred in this and 'Travels with Boogie' are all the more amusing because it happened to him and not me! However, it is also because of these books that I have undertook sections of the Pennine Way (and South West Way) myself, though not with a dog. In summary, read it, laugh and go walking yourself - it's the only way to travel.

This is an account of a walk along the Pennine Way (or at least, most of the Pennine Way) by One Man and His Dog, namely Mark Wallington and Boogie. It's certainly not a guide-book - there isn't even a map in my paperback edition! Nor is it designed to tempt you onto the Pennine Way - there are no pictures either, although I'd suggest taking note of the some of the scenes he describes and using Google Images or Flickr so you can see them for yourself (at least on your computer screen)!
Rather this is a journey in the company of a man transitioning between his prime and middle age, and what he thinks and sees as he walks from Derbyshire to Northumberland. It's mainly about human nature, through Wallington untangling his own motivations for undertaking this walk as well as his meetings and observations with others. His dog, Boogie, provides light relief.
It's an easy page-turner and kept me going happily through a 3-hour plane journey. It's rarely less than amusing and is sometimes genuinely funny. I wouldn't call it profound, but it does untangle the motives people in their late 30s and 40s have for doing things, and in that sense it speaks to me more than the thoughts of a long dead philosopher.
Buy this book expecting a pleasant few hours in Wallington's relaxed company and you won't be disappointed.

As others have said, I don't think this is as funny as the first two 'Boogie' books, but still an enjoyable read. I particularly enjoyed it as it is in the area where I live and so could relate to the places mentioned. I did also learn a bit, as I did not know the full route of the Pennines.
