The southern section of the 256-mile Pennine Way starts at Edale in the heart of the Peak District and runs northwards along the hills, which form the backbone of England, through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park to Bowes on the south-eastern borders of the Lake District. This book provides a full and detailed description of the route accompanied by 1: 25,000 Ordnance Survey maps marked with points of interest along the route. There is information on geology, land use, wildlife and features of historical or archaeological interest as well as a "Useful Information" section giving details of public transport and other facilities along the route. National Trail Guides are published in association with the Countryside Agency, the body responsible for setting up and maintaining these long-distance walking routes in England.

This is the second National Trail Guide I've bought (the other was Roland Tarr's Minehead to Padstow section of the South West Coast Path) and I've found them both thoroughly researched, well presented and practical guides to walking the trails concerned. There's a short introductory section about planning followed by the meat of the book, the section-by-section guides, each supposedly representing around a day's walking. Personally, I found the descriptions excellent, particularly as they are combined with a 1:25,000 Ordinance Survey map showing each day's walk clearly marked. This works much better than most guide books in helping you avoid getting lost.
So this is a great place to start if you're thinking about walking the Pennine Way. But you may also want to take some 1:50,000 maps to make sure you really know where you are; and if you want to know more about history, sights en-route, or pubs, you may want to consider taking along a more lyrical or colourful guide too. Finally, the Trail Guides don't mention places to stay - quite rightly, as these quickly go out of date and are best researched on-line.
