I have used both the Pennine Way books by Tony Hopkins when walking the Pennine Way and found them excellent.

The book is mainly taken up with a sequential description of the route. Each of the route sections has 1:25000 mapping of the entire Way, alternative routes where applicable, and detailed text. The text is good, not only with covering the route with pretty accurate way finding advice but also with a lot of local history, geology, wildlife info etc. etc.

There are additional sections on walking the Way, distances, overview maps etc. but it is fairly sparse (the Trailblazer The Pennine Way (British Walking Guide)guide is much better for planning purposes).

Space constraints mean that the large scale maps cannot show much of the nearby area (it is a must to not rely on the book alone but to have the OS maps also). However, for large sections of the walk I would walk with this in my hand keeping the map in the rucksac (the books stood up well to rain and being bashed around). The only other drawback is they are slightly on the heavy side (but if they weren't they wouldn't be so robust I guess).

2.0 out of 5 stars Some nice stories but bad advices 9 Oct 2012

The book don't advice properly, lacks of information in services during the route and the maps don't differ from any other map. I had these one and I've seen the other book where all the route is explained. I reckon to get the other book about the Pennine way with a map or GPS (I was using a GPS and the route figure in the topography, plus is well indicated at all time)
Besides the book I reckon use good boots to keep your feet dry you will find tones of mud even in sunny days!!

A nice book to read about the northern portion of this famous trail. (A companion book covers the south.)
