3.0 out of 5 stars Music from the 1930s 11 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I came close to awarding this collection 4 out of 5, but then thought better of it.

A purist would find this CD a disappointment, since fewer than half of the 48 tracks come from the BBC television series, (the vast majority of the originals were omitted, or a different version given) and the title could therefore be considered misleading.

Although two versions of the title song 'Pennies from Heaven' appear, one by Bing Crosby and another by 'The Street Singer' Arthur Tracy, only the latter appeared in the television series , where (according to my treasured LPs) it was also sung by Edward Molloy with Louis Levy and the Gaumont British Symphony.

The inclusion of several American recordings, notably those by Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, detracts from the simple charm of the original, which is a pity.

However, with the exception of Fred Astaire's 'Let's Face the Music and Dance' which appears to have been taken from a movie soundtrack, they are all perfectly good recordings and a good example of the popular music of that time.

Since this review was first written, a full selection of music from the television series HAS been issued - with no less than 69 tracks. However, the price left me gasping for breath!

4.0 out of 5 stars A CAUTIOUS WELCOME 2 April 2009
By Barry McCanna TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Don't be misled by the title, which evokes the Dennis Potter play. The only link with TV is that this CD is being advertised via that medium, so it may garner fresh devotees for the music. The compilation draws mainly on recognisable songs by known artists, but suffers from a lack of clear focus on the genre. "Original songs" implies the first recording of a number, which is not always the case, three of the 44 tracks are instrumental, and by today's standard a double CD should provide 150 minutes listening time. The slipcase is superficially attractive, but the photo is unrelated to the contents. There's some inconsistency in terms of the track listing, which lacks recording dates. Ray Crick's liner note fills in some of the gaps, but photos of the vocalists could have been included. Remastering is excellent, and I hope it sells in droves, but its appeal to established collectors may be influenced by how many of these tracks they own already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pennies from Heaven 3CD review 30 Aug 2012
By Paul
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I purchased this 3CD boxed set of ' Pennies from Heaven ' because I had heard this music on a cassette tape from a relative. The music tracks take me back to a time when life seemed less stressed than nowadays and you can actually hear the words, which is very relaxing and easy going.
The boxed set arrived well packaged and in the original sealed wrapping. The price I paid was excellent compared to any high street shop and internet search.
I would recommend this item to anyone who enjoys nostalgic music from a by-gone era.
I am 60 years of age if this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pennies from Heaven 30 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
A nice varied collection of popular music from the pre-war period which would have been even better if some more 'upbeat' tracks had been included. Sound quality is good, but I think the recording dates should have been given.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CD set to treasure 8 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Like so many others, I owe it to the Dennis Potter series of the late 70's for bringing this magnificant era of music to my attention. Despite my infatuation with all types of rock music fads, this dance band music of the 1930's has remained a constant and has been the catalyst for exploring more of the genre. This collection is superb value for money and it has been played to death since I purchased it to replace my now defunct cassette versions, probably bought in the early 80's. It is easy to forget that this was once the most exciting music in Britain and these bandleaders and vocalists were superstars. What would I have given to have been there - to hear that maudlin legato delivery of Al Bowlly with the Lew Stone Band - live !
This is as good a collection as any - buy and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sceptical - No, not me 18 Jun 2013
By Big D
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Now then, as a child of the swinging sixties this was very far from the type of music that I would listen to. And yes, it was pidgeoned into that hole known as 'grandad music', therefore, definitely not for me. Then however, as for so many others, came THAT tv series, and suddenly, something strange occured. I actually found myself enjoying it. Being still young though, it was still filed away, only this time under the heading 'not too bad but wouldnt be caught dead listening to it'.
Fast Forward 30 years.......
I bought this as a fathers day present and lulled by its title, decided to revisit those early days (before giving it as a present) and listen to it. WOW. Now its probably age but now that Im older - I LOVED IT. It wasnt a case of being transported back to my younger days watching the tv series, no. It was actually a case of loving the music for what it was. Simple, fun and enjoyable. It was nice to come in from a stressful days work and put on something that lifted the spirits. Something that was so out of syn with todays society (and all the plastic, superficial music around today) that it proved a winning alternative to the sounds that I had in my music collection.
My good old pops alas didnt get this present, (he got something really nice though) as I decided to keep it. It has been listened to on several occassions and always puts a smile on my face.
Do I recommend it? Of course I do. Dont be sceptical and put it off, take a chance, go for it and enjoy!!
