Book Description

It is 1939 and war with Germany is imminent. Major David Williams, who owns the village, organizes the men in case of invasion and they enjoy playing soldiers with much rivalry and humour. However, the vicar often has to reassure his secret lover, who still suffers from his experiences in the Great War.
It is the women who emerge as the strength of the community, led by Florence, a miner’s widow. The Penley Female Friends organize activities to help the war effort and boost morale.
Geoffrey, an orphan, is the village hero when he joins the R.A.F. His marriage to Elizabeth is the main village celebration. Other love affairs develop and wartime separations increase passion, when the lovers never know if they “will meet again.”
The German Army occupies most of Europe and the Blitz is relentless, but the villagers carry on “doing their bit,” mining coal, growing food and raising funds for the war effort, determined to preserve morale and community spirit come what may.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Pity 11 April 2014
By Alison
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was totally spoiled for me by a complete lack of commas, you're instead of your and full stops in the wrong place ie I'm going to say goodnight to Willy and then eat Pat.

The characters weren't particularly well drawn and the book came to rather an abrupt halt. It is a great pity that it wasn't proof read and that the author didn't use a grammar checker.

2.0 out of 5 stars Was Village Life Really this Easy in WWll? 29 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book really didn't grab my interest at all. Way too many characters to identify with any of them. Infact, there were so many characters it was like treading treacle trying to remember WHO they were; there was no central character as such. Far too sentimental and sugary sweet to be enjoyable and believable. It felt at times that this book was written to use as many WWll phrases as possible - "digging for victory" being very overused. It almost felt like the author had an obligation to write 'x' amount of words for the book and was just writing repetitive rubbish

I'm not sure if it was due to the Kindle download but some of the sentences just didn't make sense, no matter how many times I re-read it. As for the punctuation? Full stops in the middle of sentences or no full stop when there should have been and commas in wrong places which spoiled the flow of the book. Needless to say I won't be buying the follow-up book.

1.0 out of 5 stars badly written 12 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The idea of this book is great but so badly written its as though the author couldnt find and substance in the characters. It flitted from one to another with no explanations. I found that there was no depth to the book at all. Thank goodness it was so cheap. I only read 3 chapters and had to put it away with annoyance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Village At War. 3 April 2014
By R L B
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good story, but I thought there were too many people introduced at once at the beginning of the book, to remember all the names of the villagers and who they were I had to keep going back to the first few pages until they all slotted into place when they did it was a very enjoyable book.

What a wonderful novel, so full of superb describing words, about the exploits of people during the war, and the things they accomplished to help produce food, and carry on farming in rural villages.
