Penlee-Loss of a Lifeboat,
By R D Pope (Bexlyheath, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Penlee: The Loss of a Lifeboat (Paperback)
I remember this event breaking on the news at the time, and have visited the area and Mousehole in particular on many occasions. However nothing quite prepares you for the true story of these couragious men that lost their lifes trying their hardest to rescue the crew of the stricken vessel. I couldn't put the book down, and wanted to know what happened next all the time.Reading this makes you think pretty hard about the sacrifices some people make just because of what they believe in. The narrative is really strong, from the description of the start of the journey right up till its tragic end. All in all a powerful read.

Poignant true story of courage,
By ILONACAT (WIRRAL, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Penlee: The Loss of a Lifeboat (Paperback)
Like the previous reviewer, I just couldn't put this book down. The narrative is strong and written by a man who clearly understands both lifeboats and the very distinctive part of Cornwall where this tragedy took place. What is recounted is tragic, there's no way out of that. Eight lifeboatmen died on the night of December 19th 1981, all from the Cornish village of Mousehole, all leaving behind grieving families and many friends.[...] What I'm left with is boundless respect for these brave men and for all people in the lifeboat service who risk their lives to make the sea a slightly less treacherous place. And I certainly intend to visit Mousehole again- a beautiful and friendly place-to pay my respects.

A sad story, told well,
By
This review is from: Penlee: The Loss of a Lifeboat (Paperback)
Being married to a West-Cornishman, I well remember the effect the loss of the Solomon Browne had on our village. Our own lifeboat crew were inconsolable, but still got on with the job.Nearly 30 years later, and living now in the Midlands, we still actively support the RNLI - we've lived with them. This book tells the story of December 1981 without any attempt to raise the dead men as martyrs, yet still conveys their bravery. Un-put-down-able.
