Book Description

10 May 2012
The bonsai tree has become a near-ubiquitous aspect of Japanese art. Less recognised, penjing is a traditional Chinese art which encompasses bonsai and expands upon it. This lovely book showcases the Chinese art of penjing in all its aspects and covers all three categories, tree penjing, rock penjing, and water-and-land penjing. A feast for the eyes, Penjing: The Chinese Art of Bonsai provides a wealth of information for the academically inclined as well as the practically minded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good instruction. Good photography. 20 July 2014
By M. Wellhaven - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Having had 20+ years in bonsai, been a leader of several related organizations, and with study trips to Asia; this is the best book I have found on the subject. If you are a beginner, it is a good book. If you seek a deeper philosophy and more advanced study in design, it is a good book. It is also clear and well written. I like that the many great pictures show young trees (inexpensive) and very old trees (expensive). Based upon Mr. Qingquan writing, he must also have a very good understanding of the Japanese tradition of saikei, the Japanese version of Penjing. There is also an extensive list of plants that lend themselves to miniature landscapes. Not every master can write books. Zhao Qingquan has done it here.

5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous 3 Nov 2012

This is an art form that is exquisitely beautiful. The presentation is good, photos good, and so on. Chinese landscape painting is interesting; this is basically 3-D landscape painting, sometimes with bonsai trees. Gorgeous stuff.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book. 3 July 2014

Fantastic book. I was very curious to determine the difference between Japanese Bonsai and Chinese Penjing. Most information or searches on the internet of "Penjing" leads you towards Japanese Saikei. The book is full of great information, and absolutely gorgeous pictures, which really capture the essence of Penjing.

I hate to say it, but I may now be persuaded away from Bonsai to pursue Penjing with heavier interest.
