Product Description

What's in a name? Rather more than you might at first suspect, for names are steeped in history and myth and have much to tell us about our past, our beliefs - even our personality traits. The Penguin Pocket Dictionary of Babies' Names takes a close look at 3500 names, explaining origins and meanings, showing how some have changed in popularity and use over time and providing all the diminutive and variant forms.

Part of Penguin's major new series of reference titles ranging from Spanish and French dictionaries to books on spelling and quotations.

About the Author

David Pickering is a freelance writer and editor. He is the author of a number of reference works including the Cassell Dictionary of Abbreviations and the Cassell Dictionary of Proverbs. He lives in Buckingham.

Struggled to find a baby name book that wasn't a silly amount of money!! I was getting a hamper together for my sister, just wanted to put a baby name book amongst it - after all you can google anything now, just nice to have. This ones great, didn't have the name she chose - Alfie but it was nice for her to flick through!

Average name book - split into girl/boy sections with a part on saints day names and a couple of pages of celebrity baby names. Also shows the top 50 names in england & wales, scotland, the usa and australia. I was disappointed with the choice in this book as i was looking for a book with more unusual baby names in it.
