Product Description

Product Description
From its roots in the American South to today's world stage, the journey of the blues has encompassed countless artists and recordings. But how can you find the best of them? The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings is a uniquely informative, insightful and easy-to-use guide through the jungles of the record shop and the online music store. It surveys the recorded work of more than a thousand blues artists, from towering figures of the past like Charley Patton, Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson to stars of the modern era such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan, providing crisp, expert and witty reviews of almost six thousand CDs. Whether you're a blues aficionado or just starting a collection, this is required reading.

About the Author
Tony Russell is a music historian who has written on country music, blues, jazz and other forms of popular music in a wide variety of publications. He has researched, written and presented many musical programs for BBC Radio, and has acted as consultant on many radio and television documentaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars All The Blues You Need , 4 Jan 2007
By J. Poole "thestius" (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
923 pages long (including index) this prodigiously researched volume is all any Blues aficionado could need. Over 1,000 artists are included and although not every artist is here (that would be an impossible task) all major stars are, from the early twenties to the present day complete with career summations and currently available records. The album comments are admirably succinct and informative but certainly not always hagiographic; sometimes acerbic and often witty comments litter the book: ("Boss's tenor sounds like a drunken tugboat negotiating the Chicago river in thick fog" comes from a Billy Boy Arnold album). I cannot praise this volume too highly and look forward to a second edition with relish.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wide-ranging and informative guide to blues on CD., 7 Sep 2006
By Jazzrook (Purbrook , Hampshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Tony Russell and Chris Smith are knowledgeable blues experts who have compiled a wide-ranging and indispensable 923-page guide to the bewildering number of blues CDs flooding the market.
There are concise biographies of more than a 1000 blues artists together with lucid and entertaining reviews of almost 6000 CDs currently available. Each CD is given a star rating with a crown reserved for those recordings the authors consider to be "cornerstones of a blues collection".
The 1st edition of 'The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings' is a monumental achievement and an endlessly browsable book which should prove invaluable to the blues connoisseur as well as anyone aiming to build a collection. Hopefully, it will be updated at regular intervals like its excellent companion volume 'The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD'(now in its 8th edition).

2.0 out of 5 stars Do these guys really like the blues?, 19 Oct 2007
By Patrick Hurley "townes" (ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A useful book but nowhere near as enthusiastic as similar blues recordings summaries by their American counterparts. In the introduction, it is explained that occasionally a four star rating is prefixed with a crown to note CDs that are considered truly exceptional; cornerstones of a collection. How could true blues afficiandos then not award such an accolade to even one album by Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson (II), Freddie King, Otis Rush or Mance Lipscomb - to name only a few!

Reasonably comprehensive listings but outrageously unreliable.
