It is a shame the reviewer above trashes the book because of one perceived inaccuracy. There must be a hidden agenda there. In general the Penguin Book of Ghosts is a highly enjoyable, accessible and carefully researched book on a fascinating subject. It was written by two of the most trusted experts on the subject. Yes, it is somewhat distilled from the much larger, broader tome The Lore of the Land, which should mean it appeals to readers who are interested particularly in ghosts rather than folk tales, legends, oral history and other related items. England is probably the most haunted place in the world, and this little gem of a book is the perfect place to look for information on its less tangible residents.

As we are coming up to Halloween I'd thought I'd draw people's attention to this delightful book - not a boring page in it, and such an attractive cover. Anyone with an interest in ghosts or folklore should buy it - and anyone looking for a nice Halloween present for a friend should buy two!

Having originally purchased this for my wife, who is an avid reader of true ghost stories, some years ago, I read some extracts from it myself at the time and found it to be a most absorbing read.

However I found the print in the book rather tiny, probably due to the fact that there were so many pages, that had the publishers chosen to use print of a standard size, then the hefty tome that would have inevitably resulted would have been too heavy to carry and too expensive to produce. Consequently I did not, at that time, explore as much of the content as I would have liked due mainly to the difficulties I was experiencing with the limited size of the text.

It therefore came as a pleasant surprise recently, to find this volume accessible for download on my KIndle FIre HD, as it enabled me to determine a comfortable text size for myself. It proved to be a most fascinating read, with the book being divided into sections based on English counties and I found myself considering both the similarities and differences in the accounts of ghosts and hauntings in different parts of England.

Some books on this theme that I have encountered previously have tended to stray somewhat into detail about obscure legends, but this book thankfully does not do that. It maintains a fascinating journey that adheres strictly and determinedly to the subject of ghosts and hauntings.

This must represent the most extensive collection of its kind and in relation specifically to English ghosts alone and not other parts of the British Isles.

It is rather an expensive purchase, even in its Kindle form, but bearing in mind the sheer enormity of the content and the years of painstaking research that must have been put into it by its authors, it is worth every penny and I have no reservations in heartily recommending it.

A well researched book as expected, having met one of the authors and heard her lecture.

Despite the hype. Uninspiring old fashioned dont bother there are many modern ghost books ou there that are better. Still worth having as part of a ghost tales library
