Product Description

The Penguin Book of Card Games is the authoritative up-to-date compendium, describing an abundance of games to be played both for fun and by serious players.

Auctions, trumpless hands, cross-ruffing and lurching: card players have a language all of their own. From games of high skill (Bridge) to games of high chance (Newmarket) to trick-taking (Whist) and banking (Pontoon), David Parlett, seasoned specialist in card games, takes us masterfully through the countless games to choose from.

Not content to merely show us games with the conventional fifty-two card pack, Parlett covers many games played with other types of cards - are you brave enough to play with Tarot? With a 'working description' of each game, with the rules, variations and origins of each, as well as an appendix of games invented by the author himself, The Penguin Book of Card Games will delight, entertain and inform both the novice and the seasoned player.

Holiday fun in a book 21 Jun 2009
By M. Sear

I never realised so many card games existed. Then my friends introduced me to this book and crikey! This book plus a pack of cards is all you need to keep an entire family having fun on holidays, whether you are in the sun by the pool or in Britain in the rain. The whole family loves it.

Hundreds of games in here - compact book and very easy to read. Nice historical introduction to each 'type' of game.

I ordered this book as I thought it would be great for my camping holiday. Unfortunately when it arrived I realised this was not a book to be taken lightly! It is highly advanced and would not be good for people who want to read and learn to play relatively quickly and easily. Would be good for card experts or people who would like to be card experts. As I realised it was not what I needed I sent it back and was promptly refunded without fuss.
