At first impression this book is about the basic Christian doctrine of the victory of Christ on the cross. But it moves on to challenge modern disciples to a boldness and an authority to "do the things that Christ did". This is not a book to be read passively

Evidence that evil is flourishing faces Christians every day, leaving many feeling hopeless and helpless. What they don't realize, says esteemed pastor Jack Hayford, is the power that is theirs through the cross. Spiritual warfare is for more than just scripture times, and this lies at the truth at the core of this book. I'm remain unconvinced that the Christian marketplace needs another book on Spiritual Warfare. Bold claims abound regarding the capacity of one person to defeat the darkness,....and this wasn't a description of Jesus Christ! Truly we have the power of the risen Christ entrusted to us but this somewhat pedestrian publication didn't tool me and what more for the journey with Jesus. Often-times and more than occasionally unhelpful! I wanted and expected more as a fan of previous Jack Hayford writing. Solid & unspectacular!

Book on prayer promotes spiritual growth 16 April 2011
By KmVictorian - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
"Penetrating the Darkness," by Jack Hayford with co-author Rebecca Hayford Bauer, is one of the best books on prayer I've read in years. It's not so much a book of prayer techniques as an in-depth explanation and charter of the basis for Christian prayer.

"We are not manipulating God; we are being invited to partner with Him with the same passion He has," Hayford says. If our vision is large enough, we are actually able to pray the kind of prayers that will spread the kingdom of heaven here on earth. "There is a biblical connection between prayerful, humble yet bold faith and the breaking of the powers of hell," the author boldly proclaims.

I highly recommend this book for readers who may wish to go beyond the simple prayers for help that we often utter. Those prayers certainly have an important place in our daily and devotional life. But for spiritual pilgrims who are seeking a greater understanding of prayer, I believe they will be helped and enlightened by the stunning breadth of vision in this book.

Our Authority in Christ 19 May 2011
By Peter - Published on
Format: Audio CD
In "Penetrating the Darkness", Jack Hayford explains the authority Christ has given to us over the powers of darkness. We are not engaged in a war with flesh and blood, but with principalities in spiritual places. Thus, our warfare with the enemy is conducted by the Spirit, through prayer. Spiritual warfare in prayer is the major topic of this book. The audiobook that I listened to was narrated by Tim Lundeen. His voice was not boring, but soft enough to enjoy listening to during rides to and from work.

Some of the topics that the author discusses in this book are: Intercession, supplication, binding and loosing, and the keys to the kingdom. Jack Hayford uses a mix of Scripture, word study, and personal experience to explain these difficult topics. The author doesn't distort these topics with a "name it and claim it" theology. Instead, the entire book is based on the power and the authority given to followers of Christ by His Spirit, through the blood and the cross.

If you are tired of being accused by the accuser, sick of seeing relationships ruined by the spirit of division, or angry at the blood of the righteous that has been spilled by the murderer, you will want to read this book. It will explain what Christ has given to you for the battle that the forces of heaven are engaged in against the forces of hell. If you think that spiritual warfare doesn't involve you, then Satan will bring it to your door. You don't have to be a victim. In Christ, each of us has been given the power to transform the lives of people around us and even the lives of those far away. We bring the light of Christ into the darkness, and the darkness cannot stand against it.

I received this book free from through the christianaudio Reviewers program.

Intercession - A Kingdom Privilege and Responsibility 5 July 2012
By David - Published on
Format: Paperback
In Daniel 7:25, we are warned in the last days the the enemy will seek to 'wear-out' the saints of God. Yet, he will surly fail for the Kingdom of God has even now been given over to His sons & daughters (Luke 12:32). In Penetrating the Darkness: Discovering the Power of the Cross Against Unseen Evil, Pastor Jack highlights the role of Intercession in the life of every believer. The word for Intercession in Hebrew is "pagah" - it carries the concept of advancing beyond the usual limit, to take ground by force, and to happen upon a place. The book outlines practical steps believer can (and must) take to press forward in the Kingdom of God. The meditations on the Word of God were both enlightening & refreshing.

He writes, "In the realm of the Spirit of God, I begin to recognize I am doing more than reciting names or situations to Almighty God, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working in me - a redeemed human being - according to the promises of God, I am interceding for an entire people, and He begins to work to give us the nations as an inheritance." (p. 45).

Intercession begins when we enter the courts of our Father with thanksgiving & praise (Psalm 100:4), as we lift our hearts to Him for guidance (Psalm 139:23,24), asking Him to set our path (Proverbs 3:5,6), and to extend the Kingdom as He leads (e.g., Jeremiah 31:17).

I highly recommend the book. Let me also encourage those who read the book to keep a journal of the truths & "seeds of life" sown into your spirit. For as you do, the Word of God will certainly accomplish what He intended. May we all grow in this vital area of faith and bear much fruit.

I am so glad I bought this book. I wasn't sure what I expected, but once I started reading, it was very hard to take a break from it. The principles of prayer, living a Godly life, a life of interceeding... are most valuable for every Christian to know. Some things in this book were new to me & I appreciated learning so I can be sure that I'm prepared to penetrate the darkness with my prayers.
