4.0 out of 5 stars Passion in Poland! 21 Sep 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Pendragon fans have been waiting a (very) long time for this dvd, recorded in April 2011. Nick Barrett, leader, writer, guitarist has already apologised for the delay arising from, I believe, a poor soundtrack and other technical issues. So what does that leave us with? As usual, the standard of musiciamship is 1st class and I'm always amazed at how a 4 piece band can make such a big sound. The band were touring 'Passion' at the time , so understandably the set is drawn from this album, but Pure ('Freaksow,Indigo etc) and the earler catalogue is also well represented (Nostradums, Shane, Paintbox et al) make for an exhaustive trawl through the band's career. The concert is filmed at the same Polish theatre as the previous Concerto MaximoConcerto Maximo, but shot using an entirely new and dazzling light show, with clever use of camera angles and editing to ensure that the whole thing maintains your interest.

Barret is such an under-rated guitarist and his soloing is a joy. I have to say that Passion isnt my favourite album Passion (Cd+dvd W/Slipcase), but the songs do take on a different shape played live. A lump came to my throat when Barret goes into the rap towards the end of Empathy becuse its such a jump from singing to a rap delivery. It works very well. The band's new anthem is course 'THis Green and pleasant land', Barrett's strongly felt lament for the debasement of values in British society - so we get rap and social commentary, are you sure this is prog?!- The band play against a backdrop of bird's eye shots of the UK coastline, the armed forces on memorial day and Wootten Basset funeral corteges.

3.0 out of 5 stars blu ray quality is indeed a chaos 1 Oct 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
My expectations were very high for a BD release coming from Pendragon and I have waited for several months but the end result is a mixed bag: poor video quality for a blu ray, no DTS sound...the setlist and energy coming from the band are great but Concerto Maximo is still the crown jewel in terms of performance and high quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little chaos is good! 2 Oct 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
The tradition continue with Pendragon, to do a DVD to Katowice in Poland at the same venue. You can collect the DVD's with a 90% different set list each time. This is their first Blu-Ray and i though that it would be time to have a nice surround mix, but it's not the case here again. This is a PCM 5.1 mix with a unpleasant reverb echo. Not that the sound is terrible, but why make a 5.1 mix if it don't add anything.

The show contains a lot of songs from the two latests cd's, which show the band incorporated some heavy parts, more obvious in these songs ; "Comatose", "Freakshow" and "Empathy", the latter has even a rap section. "Feeding Frenzy" tell it all, it's really frenzy! The Passion's CD have been written to fit the new dynamic style of the drummer Scott Higham. The standout track is at the first encore ; "Indigo" who reminds us of the band Arena and Pink Floyd for the Gilmour guitar style of Nick Barrett.

I hope that the band will continue into this direction, because their sound was becoming too polished, and repetitive. It was time to bring some chaos in their music. The Blu-Ray contains also a interview with Nick and a documentary of 45 minutes that it's worth watching one time with Nick behind the camera.
