Product Description

Description
The Icarus Line's second album was also their last before the departure of founding guitarist Aaron North. More ambitious than 2001's MONO and past EPs, PENANCE SOIREE sacrifices none of the band's abrasive reputation for both on- and off-stage mayhem. The Icarus Line sound bigger here, but the unrelenting gritty sound, and singer Joe Cardamone's sleazy-prurient vocals, keep it firmly in the gutter where belongs. They're at their best when going all out, as on "Party the Baby Off" and "Up Against the Wall".

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly phenominal follow up, 6 May 2004
I bought this album after hearing many rave reviews but not many Icarus Line songs. Once I'd heard it for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. After a few listens, the album grew on me and I realised how genius it actually is. It starts with the bass-fueled cracker 'Up Against The Wall Motherf**kers', which is a perfect start to the album. The frantic 'Spit On It' follows and is easily one of the best tracks on the album. Some other highlights from the album are: the phenominally catchy 'On The Lash' with it's amazing guitar riff, 'White Devil' and the Suicide-esque 'Meat Maker'. The album finishes on a high with the excellent 'Sea Sick' and 'Party The Baby Off'. A must for fans of punk and rock 'n' roll alike. Now that I've heard 'Mono', I can say that The Icarus Line have put things up a few notches. A worthwhile purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, 26 April 2005
By R. Wilson "throwaway_hero" (newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well i bought 'Mono' years ago and never really appreciated it til recently when I dug it out and gave it a listen, I found it had some brilliant tracks, having developed an Icarus Line buzz, I went and bought Penance Soiree, I got hooked on this album as soon as I put it on.

It starts with 'up against the wall...', the beat and bass in this song get stuck in your head, its a great track. a fair few tracks are confusing and just sound the same, not to say that they sound bad though. The best tracks here are 'Up against the wall', 'Spike Island', 'White Devil', 'Virgin Velcro'.

Another thing that impressed me with this album is that they decided to make some mellow songs, 'getting bright at night' and 'big sleep' which are great tracks. Cordamone's vocals are distant and hazy but also great, sounding a little like Jack White and the band in general soundin a little like iggy and the stooges. Anyway, this is a great album that is terribly underrated and unknown. get it and you'll feel special since liking this band is like having a great secret.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROCK N ROLL! ROCK N ROLL! BRING ON THE PAIN!, 25 April 2004
This band have been called emo. This band have been compared to FuneralFor A Friend. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! No children....this is pure punk rockmade by people who take drugs and break things. On the subject of drugs, the whole album is like a bad acid trip or something. Tis mighty crazyfor sure....think The Jesus And Mary Chain, Spacemen Three, The Stoogesand My Bloody Valentine. Then again I'm sure most of the people who readthis probably think that Funeral For A Friend are the best band in theworld and so those bands will mean nowt to them. Retards. So buy thisalbum, get rid of all your crappy "screamo" CDs, and reflect on how coolyou are.
